Nurses caps!

Published

does anyone else out there have the desire to wear the old fashion nurses caps and would you dare do it??? i have always wanted to wear one...first because i earned one....2nd, because i think they look great and distinguish us from the rest of the workers.

i was told in nursing school that the reason we do not wear them anymore is because of the infection control issue, but i would really love to get one and just wear it to work once!! lol

better yet, do you know of anybody that still wears one???? i have found a place that you can buy one and am thinking of doing it just for the fun of it! anyhoo, was just a wondering about this!!!

paulette :p

I, for one, am old-fashioned enough to know that patients, residents, clients, etc. do like their nurses in white and with caps. However, that discriminates against our male nursing colleagues (who are very valuable to our profession) and many nurses did not/do not keep their caps clean. I worked hard for mine, liked wearing it and only stopped because I got out of the hospital setting. Am just gutsy enough to wear it on occasion and my staff are surprised but respectful! The cap does not make us a professional, but it distiniguishes us from the rest of the employees! And each school (used to) has their own cap, usually with significant meaning behind the design. Find out what your school cap is and wear it proudly! Even if it is only on occasion!

AmyLiz...there are student nurses where I work who wear white golf shirts with colored pants, then other student nurses are wearing the traditional white uniform with the school logo and nursing department on the sleeve of their shirts.

I would just like to see a certain uniform that ONLY nurses can wear. I've worked with nursing assistants who think they are nurses to the point of acting that way with patients making it difficult for the patients to distinguish between the staff caring for them.

One thing I am HIGHLY opposed to is the segregation of degrees by uniform choice. A nurse is a nurse is a nurse and should not be segregated at work by making the ADNs and Diploma grads wear one color while the BSNs wear another color. Now...THAT would insult me! :(

Where I work it is required for nurses to wear THE CAP!!! All of us hate it though. The only time we don't have to wear them are dress down days!!! We also have to wear all white. No colors or prints of any kind--not even on lab jackets!!!

hi hi! this is my first time to write in here. about the cap thing ... i am a nursing student in the Phil ... we still wear our caps unless we have our exposure at the MICU, NICU, SICU ...

the nurses in the hospital, where i am having my exposure, still wear their caps if they are woring in the ward ... :D

Wow, I haven't worn my cap in years! I wore it, along with a classmate the first shift after receiving our licence. After that we would wear them every year for Nurses Day. They are difficult to work in, just not used to something high on top of my head. I need to do a presentation and interview for a Compass Award next month and plan to wear it as part of the presentation. I have always wanted a cape...anyone know where I can find one?

I like the nursing cap as well. The one I got at pinning wasn't the best and I am sure they may be a little hard to get used to but I think we do look more professional. I dont see what it would have to do with an infection control issue since we wear our shoes in and out of the hospital. I think it is more of a comfort issue really. Have a good day..

The cap would make me 6'2". I could see myself knocking that thing off a LOT.

Marie,

That would be a problem:) When do you graduate and where are you going to school? I just recently graduated as well from KCKATS. Robin

Lots of places in MA. have one a day a year that everyone wears

their caps to work. It is interesting to see all the different shapes.

I graduated in 89, we were the last class to wear caps. I don't

miss it, but do agree that it does identify who we are.

I am thinking of buying a whole bunch of caps from Kaycaps and selling them on ebay!!! If the one I saw went for over $50, then maybe I could make some dough on the side!!!!

Our nursing school required caps...as well as blue pin striped dresses.... and we all hated them! My cap fell off too many times to count, in addition to getting tangled in multiple IV lines. Getting the stripes on our cap was a very proud moment but also exciting...we never had to wear the thing again!!:)

We just found out we'll be wearing the nursing cap for graduation. The cost? 85 bucks. I'm going to make mine out of paper before i shell out THAT much for something i'll wear ONCE.
