Nurses Activism

Published

Heard a rumor about a nurse strike happening at MCP/Hahnemann on Tuesday November 11th. Did a Google search and found nothing, so I am asking if it true and any details.

Anyone willing to supply some info? Thanks.

Thanks again for all the support you guys! You are great!

Just to update everyone. . . . We are standing stong even in this snow! Dressing in layers and using hand and toe warmers help alot. We are braving this cold weather and standing our ground.

On December 10th @ 5:50pm we are having a one month Rally (candlelight vigil). We are trying to get other nurses to come along with the community. So if you are in the area, stop by. We will be at Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital also known at MCP. The hospital is located at 3300 Henry Ave Philadelphia, PA 19129.

Take Care Everyone!

I'm sorry you feel that way ExtREmeRN, but you need to understand that this is Tenet's modus operandi, they've done this in other strikes and they do not care about whether or not nurses are operating safely. They will hire replacements and pay $ that they claim they can't afford to pay you or pay to hire additional nurses so that you won't have to be mandated to work overtime. If Tenet really cared about its nursing staff, it should have bargained in good faith instead of stonewalling. Trust me, this is the very same issue that occurred in Worcester, MA (St. Vincent's Hosp now Worcester Medical Center) and the nurses had the support of the public, the other unions (nurses, police, fireman, etc.) and Sens. Kennedy and Kerry. Please research the issues and try to understand why your colleagues were happy that they stood up to Tenet and rejected their offer, standing strong in unity- they need your support right now. MMB

I for one will try to attend. I just want to thank you for taking a stand for our profession. Mandation is a form of slavery, economic slavery, but slavery none the less. I will see to it that all the Nurses at my facility become aware of the Rally. Thanks Again!

I hope you get this before hand. I didn't realize I wrote 5:50pm but it is at 5:30pm.

Thank you for your support! We will see you there! :)

Crap...and I told a reporter it was 1750! Hope she got the time right in spite of it.

Funny (not really), I watched WPVI news this pm, and they had nothing about the rally...just a lot of holiday happy talk. :(

Once again Tenet tries to divide us Todays newsReport approx 200 workers laid off just in time to miss any unemployment benifits before christmas. Most of the ppl inside belive WE are justified in what we are fighting for --Thank all of you for your continued support...We shall prevail for the sake of our patients and nurses evrywhere

Deal could end MCP nurses' strike

STAFF REPORTS

Striking nurses at Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital in East Falls and Tenet Healthcare Corp. yesterday reached a tentative agreement on a labor contract that could end a five-week-old strike by nurses.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said the tentative agreement was reached during a negotiating session that also included a mediator. Details of the agreement were not disclosed last night. A ratification vote has been set for tomorrow, the hospital spokeswoman said.

The strike, which began Nov. 11, involved the facility's 268 nurses and centered on the workers' opposition to mandatory overtime.

The strike has had a significant effect on the hospital. Last week, the hospital said it would lay off 165 workers and reduce the hours of 35 because of a lack of patients it blamed in part on the strike.

One of the region's oldest hospitals, MCP began in 1850 as the nation's first medical college for women. University now controls the medical school, which uses the campus for teaching and research, and Tenet owns the hospital.
