Can someone tell me how much does a new grad make in Houston and Dallas Area? Does ADN and BSN make a difference in pay? Thanks

Lvn home health25-37/visit.If you had prevoius experience as an Lvn and Cna they count those too.Add also shift differential and weekends

Houston area base salary---- salary.com:

Staff RN: 25%tile--$55,886 75%tile--$66,022 per yr.

LVN: 25%tile--$36,209 75%tile--$41,259 per yr.

I live north of Houston and some of the hospitals in my area are phasing-out LVN positions. When a LVN quits or goes elsewhere the position is replaced with a RN position. I know a LVN that has worked at the hospital in my area since around 1985 and when an LVN quits the job position is replaced w/ a RN slot. She is scared to quit and go back to school bc her position will be gone...btw she works in day surgery.

I have talked to a few recent RN grads (May 05' grads)....and one started days in the ER @ $26 base pay. Another two I spoke w/ started @ $24 per hr base pay. A friend of mine got a job after completing the LVN program in a dialysis clinic starting @ $19 per hr. I think it just depends on the facility and negotiations....but i assumed the starting hrly pay for RN grads was 20-22 per hr. and the 05' grads i have spoken w/ said it is more like 24-26 in this area.

I will start the RN program in the fall so i will be prepared for a starting salary ranging anywhere from $20-26 per hr. after becoming licensed. Hope this helps :)

I am excited to hear the pay rates in Houston. I am moving there after I graduate in December with my BSN. I can't wait. Thanks for all of the great info.

Well this answers my question in the Pre-nursing student forum. :wink2: I live in the Houston area and couldn't decide between continuing on with my pre-req's for the BSN program at UTMB or just go for my ADN at a local community college (San Jac). Ultimately I want to earn my masters and work as a nurse midwife, so I will have to go back for my BSN but I'm just eager to get out there right now...And with that salary I'm even more eager. :lol2:

Hi, I'm glad to hear that you are eager to go back to school for your BSN degree. I'm currently taking my pre-req's at a community college and hoping to get in by next year. I didn't knwo the salary for Rn and BSN are closely the same. I think that is such bulls*** on what the hospital pay. I mean we go to school and extra 2 years and the starting salary is the same? I should of just went for my ADN program instead of doing this BSN. I still don't know whether I should stop the BSN and go straight to ADN.

You should get your BSN. There are nursing positions such as nurse manager which require you to have a BSN and you will be getting paid more than a nursing staff position, so it will pay off. Plus all the jobs I read at hospitals prefer that you have a BSN. Once you are done with your prereqs you should apply to both the ADN and BSN programs in your area just because they are so competitive and there's a possibility you won't get chosen for the BSN but you will for the ADN or vice versa. Just apply to many schools as you can. I've read on this board how someone hasn't been accepted at a university for a couple of years now and I think there are waiting lists for ADN programs.

Thanks Veronica I really appreicate your advise, I guess I'll suck it up and continue my school , gosh I have such a long way to go. I can't even apply until next Fall of 2007, thats how long its going to take me to finish my pre-reqs, gosh i should of stayed in college and not taken a long break, by now I've would have been done. I wiash I could win the lotto:) :clown: :p

Yeah, I want a BSN for the long term, but they just expect us to have so much done before we can even apply! What are we supposed to do for two semesters while we wait to see if we can start? I wish they could figure out something to do away with all that lag time.

As for me, I'm going to get my ADN, and then do an online transition program.
