Hello All.
I am about to graduate from a cegep in Quebec as an RN student. This is a three year diploma program. I just wanted to know if I were to transfer to Ottawa Ontario.. would I have a hard time keeping my title as an RN ? I don't want to work as RPN if I was trained as an RN. I want to get my degree right away, but it takes four years online to complete it. Would the CNO let me work as an RN while getting my degree? Would I be able to get my license in Ontario right away after I receive my diploma without going through the OIIQ? please let me know your experiences..

I doubt it because our entry to practice requirement is a BScN minimum in Ontario, but can't say for certain! I would call the CNO!

Look at CNO's website registration requirements, if you register and practice in Quebec first, then apply to CNO, you may qualify for registration under the labour mobility act.

You would have to do a Dec to Bac program. So you would have to do 2 more years of school to be able to work in another province. Quebec is the only province where you could be an RN. Even there, some hospital postings (particularly teaching hospitals) are available to clinical nurses only (Bachelor degree). You will need to pursue your studies if you intend on changing provinces.

Hello,
I am a cegep diploma RN from Quebec as well. I was able to obtain my registration from the CNO with no additional education and the OIIQ license is transferable. From start to finish, it took me about 6 months to get my license.
Now, I will give you some information that you may not like. Right now Ontario is not hiring(if they are it's probably mostly internal) and there were recently a lot of layoffs. Which means the lack of education and skills will put you at the bottom of the list. Even though I am registered to do my Bachelors and I've been working in critical care for over year, I have so far been unable to find a job after 4 months of searching and probably close to over 150 applications sent out. More than a little frustrating. Anyway- you never know when the market will change and you may have some luck! But I mostly wanted to let you know that yes-you can register.
Goodluck!

You can transfer into Ontario but won't get the same right has a BScN. Other then that since of the idiots premier, there's a lot of layoffs. They are mostly only hiring internal.
@ktrop03 What 'rights' of a BScN are you referring to? I am a Ontario RN with a BScN and do not have any special rights.
@dishes In Quebec, you can still do the college diploma to become an RN (the only province that still allows it). Anyway, the scope of practice is the little bit different depending on what you have. I am not a 100% sure of an example of the scope of practice in Quebec with a diploma or a BScN. But I know that those who a BScN get to be clinical nurses (I don't mean instructor) and so. Look up at the college's website. Has in Ontario, I am not a 100% in cases where nurses only have a college diploma what they can do or those with BScN.
@ktrop, I understand that Quebec still has diploma RNs, but wasn't clear that nurses had to have BScNs in order to work in a clinic. That isn't the case here, Ontario switched entry to practice from diploma to BScN ten years ago and some clinic nurses who have diplomas, obtained their positions because they had the most union senoirity when the clinic position became available.

There is no difference in scope of pracrice...It just means you're less likely to get hired in critical care/ hospitals or get paid as much with a DEC degree unless you have experience. I matriculated in Quebec and was registered with the OIIQ.

I am about to graduate from a cegep in Quebec as an RN student too. I already have a Bachelor of Science with a major in chemistry, Would I be able to get my license in Ontario right away after I receive my diploma without going through the OIIQ.
