Yes and no.

When I told the same MD the area of practice I was pursuing, in essence marrying two normally separate specialties into one field of practice, and that I was considering doing so as either a DNP or MD.....they said go DNP over MD.

They said for experienced, dedicated and smart NP's from traditional respected programs, there is a lot of room for growth. That at my age I would come out of residency and simply be a very new, very junior MD, a small unimportant fish in a huge MD pool. But by going the DNP route I'd be a leader in my field, and able to make a bigger impact.

While I disagree with his advice particularly with regard to being a big vs little fish it is clear that he respects you and still has some regard for our profession. He has probably worked with decent NPs which is good news. I have worked in several large hospital systems as well as in the community and although overall my experience has been positive there is no doubt we are not even close to having a similar level of respect, privilege or compensation.

I know Allina Health always has a statement that reads: "Allina Health does not hire new grads from all academic institutions. Many proprietary on-line schools do not meet Allina Health's standards due to the minimal oversight of the student's clinical experience, the high faculty/student ratio, and the lack of focus on national certification standards in the curriculum" in their NP job postings. For what it's worth, both Allina Health and Mayo are based in Minnesota. A well known proprietary on-line school is based in Minnesota.

As well as the other diploma mill "schools."

I wish more employers would do this.

I went to a reasonably well regarded B&M school 20 years ago, but still consider myself almost entirely self taught.

Had I graduated with only the knowledge from that program, it would have been a sad joke.

I wish they all would, since the accrediting agencies dont seem concerned enough to stop it.
