Thanks Laura.
12-hour shifts are still around, but are rapidly becoming rare because it's the shift that the majority of nurses prefer.
I work med-surg and we're the last of the hold outs in our facility that have a mix of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts. We have 3 med-surg units. We often get persons in your situation that need 8-hour shifts for childcare issues.
Our 3-11 shift makes a $2.00/hour differential and $4.00 per hour for 11-7.
Good luck to you. Since you're asking for feedback on specific questions, I'll move your thread to the Genearl Nurses Forum.
In my area, skilled nursing facilities and nursing homes are the places of employment that offer 8 hour shifts to RNs. In addition, outpatient clinics in my area tend to have 8 hour shifts for nurses. Good luck to you, and I hope you find something that is workable for you and your child.Anyhow, does anyone have any ideas as to what specialty have 8 hours, and if not, any single parent nurses out there have any idea how they did. it?

Hi Everyone! My name is Laura, and I graduate from the Rn program in May. I'm a little nervous, seeing how time flew so fast and were gonna be out on our own, I just hope I remember everything. Which they say we won't.
I'm really intrested in Labor and Delivery, however these 12 hours shifts on a single parent with a special needs kid is killer. I tried asking around to see if 8 hour shift exist in the nursing field. Not much luck. Paying a nanny on a graduate nurse salary aint fun. Anyhow, does anyone have any ideas as to what specialty have 8 hours, and if not, any single parent nurses out there have any idea how they did. it?
Other than that, I'm very excited that I'm almost graduating and reaching my dream.
By the way does night shift pay more as a nurse?
Thanks,
