Nurse graduating in May!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone! My name is Laura, and I graduate from the Rn program in May. I'm a little nervous, seeing how time flew so fast and were gonna be out on our own, I just hope I remember everything. Which they say we won't.

I'm really intrested in Labor and Delivery, however these 12 hours shifts on a single parent with a special needs kid is killer. I tried asking around to see if 8 hour shift exist in the nursing field. Not much luck. Paying a nanny on a graduate nurse salary aint fun. Anyhow, does anyone have any ideas as to what specialty have 8 hours, and if not, any single parent nurses out there have any idea how they did. it?

Other than that, I'm very excited that I'm almost graduating and reaching my dream.

By the way does night shift pay more as a nurse?

Thanks,

Laura:w00t:

Thanks Goldstein! I will take that in mind when I start applying. I thought the 12 hour shift were written in stone or something. Do you think I should try agencies?
As a new grad, I wouldn't advise it. A reputable agency is going to want someone with experience, and hospitals expect agency nurses to jump right in with little orientation.

Maybe I am confused. I did an OB rotation last semester. What did you mean by have you decided where to precept?

Well, were currently doing High acuity and then mental health.then our preceptorship is march25 until graduation in may. Like Im going to hopefully do my preceptorship in OB at palms west, because a nurse offered to. So we just got our preceptor forms where we pick 3 units and 3 hospitals. And if we have the name and hospital of a nurse that offered to precptor us then we put it down. The school usually places you with that nurse and hosp you picked. I mean its not guaranteed, but it usually works out that way.

I'm not sure what's available in your area, but there are some hospitals out there that have an on-site daycare and I'm pretty sure they are open at odd hours to accomodate the nursing staff. I hope you find the place thats right for you and your family. Good luck!
