Hello, I am in the Air Force. I recently applied to the 2010 Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Progam (NECP). I am waiting for the board results. Anyone else out there as anxious as me?
As a prior (I'm prior enlisted SF K9) you'll find COT to be both a hoot and an annoyance. And my guess is you'll be surprised by how disorganized it is. Don't expect the regimentation and straight answers you got in Basic - they don't exist there. The five weeks drove me nuts as a result.
Not trying to nose into your thread.
Congrats to the acceptees! Life on this side of the stripes is a lot different but worth the effort.
Hi Carolinapooh...did you do NECP as well or did you separate to become a nurse and come back in? I was just wondering about NTP. A friend of mine did NECP a few years back and she told me that some people do NTP at civilian hospitals, others go TDY to other bases to do it. If you did NECP, what was your experience with NTP and how long is it? And don't worry about "nosing in" on the thread...I don't know if anyone is really even on here anymore since we all moved to facebook, plus your advice and input (I am sure) is greatly appreciated since you have experience. :)
Hello,I am almost done with all of my prereqs for NECP, but now I'm not too sure what to do. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Hi! The first thing that you should start doing, if you have met all of the military prereqs, is find a nursing school to apply to. That takes awhile since you have to make sure it has a year-round program, you have all of their prereq courses completed, they have the proper accreditations, that you can complete it within 2 years, and that they have an AFROTC detachment or a cross-town agreement. Also that they are under the $15K annual tuition cap. Do you have the NECP guidelines already? If so I would look through that to be sure I didn't miss anything. If not, I can email them to you if you give me your email addy; they can also be found on the Knowledge Exchange website from work. I think that in October/November of this year they will release the 2011 guidelines for NECP. Good luck! :)

I actually separated and went back to school. I worked like heck to get a commission while I was in and just couldn't get one, even with strong recs and solid EPRs. But that was the late '90s and it was a different Air Force back then.
I'm currently sponsoring a new RN who's going through NTP at a civilian hospital in Scottsdale, AZ, near Luke AFB. NTP is ten weeks long and apparently is run a lot like your senior clinicals in nursing school. You do a little bit of classroom work and then work hands-on with an RN preceptor at your assigned facility. The difference is, of course, by this point you've passed the NCLEX and have your own license.
That was my back up plan...to seperate. If I wasn't accepted for NECP I was getting out in January and going to re-apply to nursing schools for spring term to do it on my own. If there's a will theres a way. I am glad they created the NECP; its a great opportunity! I can't wait to start. I feel like now that we've been notified things have slowed down again....back to waiting...for orders, to start outprocessing and for school to start. ugh...i'm not good at waiting. good luck to you all and thanks for the info carolinapooh.
Thanks for the info!! I found a school I want to go to and all of my classes are accepted there. I'm not sure what to do as far as the AF is concerned. What is the first step?? Do you know anything about bonuses? If I reenlist I will get a bonus, but I don't know if I will be able to keep it. Sorry for all the questions and thank you soo much for all your help.
Carolinapooh I just wanted to say thank you for the words of encouragement earlier in the thread while we were all waiting for the results and for all the research and info that you have provided in other threads as well.
You're welcome. I know what the waiting's like and I know it's torturous. I'm very happy for the ones selected and want to encourage those that weren't to not give up. It took me four attempts to gain a commission - I'm proof that perseverance pays off.

Hi! As for your bonus, if you know for sure that you want to be a Nurse, I would say not to take it. SRBs aren't mandatory to take. It is a gamble though because if for some reason something happens and you don't get into NECP, you cannot go back and get the bonus after the fact. I actually have someone at my work right now who wants to be an ALS instructor and they have bonuses (there are 2 people who want to do this). I contacted my USAFE functional manager and he said they would have to give the money back (called a recoupment) to be released. I guess there could maybe be a waiver out there to get someone out of the recoupment but I am not sure. That's a tough call....I know that after the new guidelines for next year's board are released, your next step would be just to make sure that you do your intent to apply on time and have your package done on time. Start your 422 early because mine took 3 months! :I Anytime you need help, come back to this thread (there is also one of facebook now (USAF NECP) with current selects and future NECP hopefuls) who can give you info as well. :)

Curious - I'm assuming you all go to COT as well?
