Nurse educator AND FNP..need advice!

Straight and to the point.. I'm a new grad and I was looking to start a MSN program in nurse education soon. I always wanted to be an NP as well. I LOVE both and I don't choose one over the other. My plan was to get me degree in educationtravel and go back to school for a MSN to DNP program to get my FNP. I figure when I start my family and want to slow down, I can have my education degree to fall back on. Is there anyone out there that you have heard of have a degree in Nurse education AND NP? I figure if you can have a degree in computer science AND be a nurse, why can't You be both a nurse educator and NP. It may sound crazy but I'm a dreamer and I believe I can do it ALL! Any honest input helps![/quote']
You could become a NP and take a certificate program in nursing education and then take the certification exam for it. Some of the certificate programs are online.

I'm a nurse educator and a NP, I didn't get the MSNed degree which I think would have helped a lot learning how to teach. Yes you can do both!

Thank you very good to know! I get on here all the time and everyone makes it seem like a waste of time or like you have to choose! Goood to know someone does both!

Thank you PrettyRN4 for asking such a great question. OCRN I am also weighing the options of becoming and FNP after I finish my MSNedu. What are your thoughts in regards to satisfaction of being in the FNP role vs Educator.

I get better satisfaction from being a NP, but being an educator is loads of fun and less stress. I really feel it's a matter of taste. This is coming from a person who still loves working on the floor as a staff nurse. I really think it's a matter of taste.

I agree with the above post where as you can get your NP and teaching certificate and teach in a NP program. That way you can have the best of both worlds. I wish you all the best.

I'm also working as a Family Nurse Practitioner and as a faculty member. It's the best of both worlds!

Well, one way to look at it: With your NP you can teach or see patients. With your MSN in education, you can't see patients as an NP. I think if you really want to do both, get your DNP as an NP. You will be very marketable as an educator or an NP.

Use the time you're in school to get really good nursing skills; you'll need those as an NP or as an educator.

I have a degree in education and teach upcoming nurses. I'm also a psych CNS, and have a practice where I do counseling and determine appropriate medications. Psych CNSs are alot like psych NPs. I get to be part of both the education and direct patient care worlds with those degrees. I enjoy the variety.

Having the education degree makes me a better instructor as well as patient and family educator. Having the CNS training and practice makes me a better instructor too. I can see things from lots of different sides.

I so agree with ctersi01.... Get the NP you can use that degree for either field. I went the MSNed route and really wish I had gone the NP instead. I love teaching but I do not have any options but to teach with my degree. My friend went the NP route and is much happier and has many more options.
