Nurse Corps Scholarship 2017-2018

Published

Hi everyone,

I am interested in applying to the nurse corps scholarship 2017 2018 in order to pay for my accelerated program of sixteen months. I have a bachelors in sociology. I have done quiet a few researches. The application cycle will be open this month but I don't know which exact date. I have read discussion threads of previous years and have found really helpful information. I want to create a platform where interested applicants can ask questions, share information, discuss and help each other.

Thanks

Ugh, 1 hour wait?? That sounds awful, thanks so much for getting the deets and passing the info on! Yeah that makes sense to me, looking at the "Degree Information" tab of the application.

Another question that you may or may not be able to answer: I am going to be in a 15-month program, from 6/19/17-8/17/18. When I entered that I will have 11 months left in the program on Sept. 30, 2017, the "Year 2 Start Date" and "Year 2 End Date" boxes disappear - making it so that I can't enter the last 1.5 months of my program (7/1/18-8/17/18) and request to be covered for those months by checking the "request funding for year 2" box. Does that make sense? Did you come up against this problem? If so, did you get any information from the HRSA specialist on how to handle it?

Thanks again!

Yeah I know it can be confusing. I did come up with this problem. Ok so even though your program is only 1.5 years you would still owe HRSA two years of service upon graduation if you receive the scholarship. That's the minimum requirement. Not 1.5 years of service because your program is 1.5 years. Nope. So for those boxes for year two you would put end time 6/30/2019 because your August 17th end date is within HRSA "school year". You'll be within the second school year for only two months- July and August 2018. When asked when is your graduation date you would put the 8/17/17 date and they can calculate it from there. Basically it's like you reserving two years of funding even though you will only be using 1.5 years of the funding. Let me know if that helps

@Future Ms.NP that does make sense - thanks so much!!

I called this morning to ask a couple other questions and double-checked on this as well to be sure they're consistent on their end. FYI, I called at 8am PST on a Monday and I got connected to someone right away. The man talked me through exactly how to fill out the Degree Information page for someone in my situation (15 month ABSN program that starts in June). Since I can't figure out how to attach a screenshot (can anyone help my allnurses-illiterate ass?? :)), I tried to write it out below:

What is the date you started, or will start, the Nursing Program for which you are requesting funding?:

6/17/17

What is your program end date?: 8/17/18

What is your expected graduation date?: 8/17/18

On 9/30/2017, in what year of your nursing program will you be enrolled?: First

Time left until completion of program: 2 Years

Year 1 Start Date: 7/1/17

Year 1 End Date: 6/30/18

Year 2 Start Date: 7/1/18

Year 2 End Date: 8/17/18

And of course, check the "I am requesting funding" box for each year. I underlined and bolded "2 Years" because that was what I was having trouble with, since technically I will only have 11 months left in my program as of 9/30/17. But he told me like three times (because I kept double-checking) that I SHOULD put "2 years" there, since I'm requesting two years of funding.

He also told me that the GPA you enter should be your most recent GPA, even if you were most reently a part-time student (although it references "full time" in the prompt for that question). That makes me a little leery, but he seemed pretty confident about what he was saying. Maybe I'll call tomorrow morning to double check, because I'm anal like that

Ok. Good. I am happy they are being consistent with the info. And you fill out yours how I filled out mines except for the year two end date. I put 6/30/2019 instead of 5/31/2019. My projected graduation date is May of 2019. I wonder if I should put 5/31/2019 in those boxes? :down:Thanks for sharing

Ok... now I am doubting that guy's info about the GPA. I just called again to confirm, and the woman told me I should put the GPA for the last PROGRAM I completed (that is, degree-earning - NOT just part time prerequisite courses). That aligns more closely with the wording on the application, but now I'm uneasy since their information conflicted. Did anyone else call to ask them about this??

She DID however confirm putting "2 Years" for the Time left in program question, so at least they're consistent there!

Sorry I didn't answer your question! I would say you should put 5/31/19 for the Year 2 End Date - both of the representatives told me to put the end date of my program in that box, not the end date of the full year of funding.

Ok. Yeah I changed it to 5/31/2019. Thanks embrothers!

As for the facilities we are supposed to work at after graduation , does ANY HOSPITAL qualify as an appropriate area?? I read something about it having to be at a critical shortage facility and that hospitals fell under that category but then it mentioned something about having a score over 14. So I'm just not quite sure about that.

No! Every hospital does not count. This is a big deal, I see many people from my cycle that didn't research their area to ensure there were qualified facilites in their area. A facility mush have a HRSA score in either primary care or mental health of or above, you can work in any department in that facility it does not have to be a primary care or mental health positions. So for example your site has a PCP score of 11 and a MH score of 18 and you are offered a position in the ED you can accept and it will qualify.

I cannot express enough for people to read this PDF cover to cover and the reference it as needed.

This link will bring you to the HRSA data warehose where you can run a report to see sites and cores in your state.

Also you can search specific addresses at this site

Do your research! Make sure there is jobs in your area. Also, makes sure you understand the tax obligations, and get an accountant that can do it for you! Good luck!!

Oh ok I think I get it . Like for example I see two approved places on that list are mercy family health center in Mercy hospital in Chicago and some thing else inside of Mt. Sinai hospital . If I was offered a position at either of those hospitals in the ED , that would be approved?

As long as they have at least one score of 14 or higher. Yes.

For GPA, they told me that they aren't totally anal about it, to use my judgement, and that they want to see science or nursing courses, so if your last completed degree didn't have any science (mine was in history) to use your prerequisite GPA, if you had several terms to show.

Are you folks doing your resume LITERALLY in chronological order (ie from oldest to newest)? They say chronological order, but I'm thinking they mean reverse chronological order, from newest to oldest... That's pretty standard for resumes...
