Nurse Corps Scholarship 2016-2017

Published

Greetings!

After binge reading the thread for 2015-2016, I decided it's time to start one for this year. I am a single mother opting to pursue a BSN after a post-quarter life crisis. Because I have multiple degrees, I have just about exhausted all of my financial aid options. I would like to hear from anyone applying for the scholarship. What's your story? What are your stats? Previous applicants and recipients I would like to hear your story too!

Starting at a private nursing school in May (with what little fin. aid I have left)

1 year AmeriCorps

1 year internship at group home for at-risk adolescents

5 years working with Dept. of Corrections (2.5 of which were counseling offenders)

EFC: 544

GPA: 3.9

Community service hours: 45

Location: GA

I love the words of encouragement. A few years ago I've heard God say what was for me is for me so dont worry about it. To hear the confirmation from someone else shows that God is in control. When A door is shut there is always a better door open waiting for us. Its hard not to get discouraged, but like John 11:40 states "did I not tell you if you believe you shall see the glory of God?". All our needs will be supplied.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. No word yet, but application still says "under review" that that's better than nothing.

I'm in MA. Award received last night.

I'm in CA. Hope this helps. Goodluck!

No new awards today yet huh? I was hoping some of us would receive good news! Still praying!

I am feeling a little sick to my stomach right now from the anticipation. Even though I said I wouldn't hold my breath, I am about to pass out..lol. No email or credit inquiry for me yet. I am ecstatic for those who have gotten their award letters already!! I am hoping this or something else comes through for me!! Good luck everyone

I was also accepted for NHSC this morning and will be declining nurse corps so there is still hope for all of you waiting! Good luck! From what I hear there will be a second round after the deadline to decline or accept!

For what it's worth (which may not be much BUT)...

I just spoke to a customer service agent who said that only 1/3 of the award notices have gone out so far. She also said that she has already spoken to individuals who missed the deadline and their award money will be put back into the pool. She also implied that my last name starting with an S and my first name starting with a J could be reason why I have not heard yet (I find that part hard to believe but I digress...)

She said there really is no reason for anyone to feel defeated yet.

Again, for what it's worth! :)

Jsam16, that's interesting. I was thinking out loud to my husband and he thought maybe they don't send them all out at once so they don't receive back so much paperwork at once and it's easier to manage. Obviously both of us are creating scenarios where I still have a good chance, but it's a thought~

The site is going to be down for maintenance tonight from 8-8:30. maybe this means more awards tonight or tomorrow???

Thanks for sharing what you found out. Interesting comment about the first letter of your last name, who knows there might be something to that. My last name starts with a T.

Hey there baby_goat and Midwivesforall, Congrats on getting both Nurse corps and NHSC and for making your decision! Quick question. I also received finalist award emails for both Nurse Corps and NHSC and am wondering what pulled you toward NHSC over Nurse Corps other than less tax burden. I have been researching potential job opportunities for both and have noticed that Nurse Corps has a minimum required HPSA score of 14 (meaning more site may qualify = potentially more job opportunities) whereas NHSC currently has a minimum score of 17 (limiting sites that could qualify = potentially harder to find a job). When I spoke with Nurse Corps today they said the finalist email pretty much means you get the award, you just need to wait a week or two to get your contract countersigned. However, when I spoke with NHSC they said that they will need to re-review the application and I will be under consideration for a final award and it is not guaranteed. So yea, any helpful insights on why you chose one over the other would be greatly appreciated since the Nurse Corps deadline is quickly approaching!
