Hello, I need some serious help as i want to get this right! I have a very good friend in BRAZIL that wishes to come to the USA and work. I have been told there is a vast short-fall of nurses and in FAct the US is activly recruiting in this field. I Will have his certifications in th next few days, he is 27 Works for the largest Hospital ( in the lab) as a biologist in Blood Research and is extremely good in both fields. i need someone with experience to tell me what he needs to do to make this hapen. as we have been told that a mistake and a rejection of ANY visa from Brazil to the USA means a 2 year wait to reapply! His English is jsut so - so but reading and writing is good just needs attention but that is all understood. He is NOT at all adverse to additional Study, as he is smart as a tack! Just need to knwo what direction to move forward to get this accomplished! Help! Addtionally, I am sure there woudl be Agencies to make this happen and woudl be very happy to get involved wiht one that has a good reputation. He wants to be in South Florida once he is here. BTW He Peaks Portuguese and Spanish and decent in English I think in 1-3 months his english in all areas would be fine.
I can't say i am thrilled with the answers but the undercurrent is what I find a problem. And since I have done this before in the last 24 months "successfully i might add" i find that the YOU SIMPLY CAN"T do THING's Attitude" so far as problematic. And frankly, it seems that many are more upset about the process or their "lot in life" and conditions etc than simply answering a direct question. There are a million ways to get this doen in this case, i was jsut exploring this one. He has 4 degrees and is employed by the Brazilain Government , so Nursing seemed liek a good avenue, I will continue to investigate alternatives and choose the best for my situation! BUt trust me, just like my last project, he will be here in less than 18 months WORKING and Legal. In some field.
I find it personally very offensive that as a personal friend of a senator that your friend would get privileged treatment. What if everyone tried to circumvent the laws put in place "for a reason". As it seems from your posts you are more familiar than the moderators with the process so why ask the questions you are asking? Many of us are in the process of legal immigration and when you boldly make claims of being able to get around the "red tape" it is going to get a very unpleasant reaction from those of us abiding by the long process. My husband and I waited for years just for a chance to apply and are fortunate enough to be in the country but are limited to travel to see our family while in this pending process for a green card. We have to pay legal fees each year as well as travel fees for the travel documents to be able to see my ailing father. But are abiding by the laws and patiently waiting for our turn at a green card.

Not sure what you mean by undercurrent as the answers you have received regarding coming over as a nurse has just on what has been happening over the last 2 years. Retrogression has been ongoing since Oct 2006 which has resulted in many nurses being affected with no exceptions with some going as far as having their interviews but not getting a visa. Your friend really needs to get his English exam passed as I am sure in what ever job you find him it will be a requirement of either IELTS or TOEFL.
We do ask though when answering that you do not attack anyone personally as it will not be tolerated. You came on here to ask about coming over as a nurse and we have given you the current situation, your friend needs to meet immigration requirements before he will get a visa and even then there is no guarantee he will get one

Folks, I have gotten alot of Wonderful information here. I have noted it al, but I am still Flabergasted at the lack of complete understanding of what I said to begin with. HIS Qualifications are without question, I am not concerned about those, I totally understand that they have to be "translated" into American Standards Etc but that is not a concern. His English will also NOT be a problem when the time comes for him to take any tests etc that wll be required. I was simply trying to find out the process. I was simply asking ( and finaly received the process required. However, I spent the BULK of my day talking Directly to Immigration and to the ACTUAL People going to sign off on this and find that they were extremely receptive to say the least! AND NOT MENTION OF 5 years was mentioned until i DIRECTLY asked about it and was told str8 out, FOR MANY THIS IS TRUE, but "we will not have that problem here". Now i have to admit, i DID make my previous call to my contact and was assured they would take care of things....they obviously did in a very few hours, as i had the name of who they needed to call. SO In closing, I thnk you al very much for the help, but there are ways to move forward ( if you work the system) leagally and with the right people out front. I was also told that MANY of those waiting had "questionable situations" whatever that means. I leave that for you to sot out. Note! It was made VERY clear that ALL requirements had to be met, al tests taken ETC. NO PROBLEM, but the wait will be more like 18 months unless there is a testing delay or he is NOT what was advertised.
note, I have a buddy that adopted a girl in a foriegn Country and has waited nearly a year to get that baby here! Brad Pitts had the process completed in 6 days.. how did this occur??

there has been no mention that his qualifications are in doubt as long as he meets requirements but i do not know what your contacts are saying when they say many of those waiting had "questionable situations" because the nurses waiting for visas have been waiting because there are no visas not because there is anything questionable about them. nurses in general come to the us with a eb3 (gc) visa and current processing times are unavailable with a predicted processing time of 2005/6 so not sure how you think he can jump the queue and if he does with a eb3 you can bet there will be some official complaints going in.
ghost116,
I am actually trying to find a way to do the opposite. I live in Georgia and I am trying to find a way to move to Sãp Paulo for personal reasons. I am an RN with an ASN and most of the undergrad work done for a BSN except the nursing courses. My portuguese isn't exactly terrific but I am learning quickly. I think we can help each other. There is probably a ton of legal stuff I know nothing about. Do you know how I get a license to practice nursing in brazil? Is there a test I have to take? What association is in charge of issuing the nursing license in Brasil? Will I need a BSN or is my ASN good enough? Almost all of the nurses at my hospital are immigrants so I can ask around if you have any questions. Please help me!!!!!

Read the posts from the moderators, who are very knowlegeable in these subject matters, often mention of at least a five-year wait for foreign-grad nurses due to the Federal government imposed retrogression.
I don't understand your "being from California" labelling. Do you mean anyone from California is different from the rest of the U.S.A.? Your written statement of "that is strange" and subsequent sentences point towards hostility.
I highly value this forum, this is where many professional nurses and future nurses express their voices and opinions. I am deeply saddened by your choice of words and lack of diplomacy in your written statements.
I cannot prevent on how you will response but if you write in a similar manner I must not dignify your next response any further by sending another response.
