I watched yesterday the Oscar-winner "Crash"... moment when Chinese woman running down the hospital hall screaming on Chinese, and she is approached by the nurse, who asked her in sympathetic and caring way: Do you speak English? And she yelled at nurse: Of course, I speak English, you stupid cow!
Yeah, sure, that's what we are there for - yell, scream, fuss, demand, curse. Whatever you want; what a great education for the general public to recognize and respect their nurses. Now as the hospitals taking the "customer service" approach, it seems people do not realize anymore they are in a hospital, in structured environment, and expecting super-service at the level of Hilton hotel, because they are paying so much money to be there. Just a thought.

So true. I had a little lady who had an auto accident a few weeks ago. She felt she should have one on one care on the general floor. Told us she was entitled. Made rediculous demands on staff to the point everyone was so ready for her to leave we were willing to pay the dr to discharge her. Some of her "requests",, wanted staff to shave her legs for her, wouldnt agree to let them discharge her from ICU until someone put her makeup on for her. And to top it off, she wanted someone to polish her toenails before she was discharged!!!
Needless to say she was another unsatisfied "customer" when she left. LOL SOOOO what?
But yes, i think its media causing a lot of what we see now.

There were a lot of messages that I took away from that movie, but I don't even remember that scene. Not that it is ever right to call someone a "stupid cow", but was she a nurse? and people in distress do strange things........anyways, of all the messages in "Crash" that stick out in your mind......
I don't think the media is causing these problems.......society already had certain ideas in their heads, media *might* be making it worse.......who knows?
........anyways, of all the messages in "Crash" that stick out in your mind......quote]Well, yes, since I recieved my RN license yesterday, this particular message kind of sticked out for me.

I have had patient last week pressing call light to change his water, because it was not cold enough. When I opened the cap, it was full of ice. How can I make it colder than that?

I find it utterly ridiculous to get Mad (Cow Disease) over a fictional movie that is produced for entertainment.

Haven't seen the movie; never been called a stupid cow. But I did answer a call light on one particular day only to have the husband of my patient tell me "fetch me a coke." I politely told him that there were vending machines on the first floor for visitors and walked out of the room. We kid all the time about switching our hospital ID badges with Denny's name tags!

I had pretty much the same thing happen to me one time. The son of one of my patients yelled for me by name as I was running down the hall- I made a detour to her room thinking something was wrong with my pt. He wanted me to bring him coffee. Youngish guy about my age! I told him if I wanted to wait on someone I had a husband at home, get up and go get it yourself!

Well you can lower the freezing point of the liquid by adding a little rubbing alcohol to the mixture. ;-)

What the character said isn't very relevent since her husband was in the slave trade. Details like that tend to make a person's opinion worth less than zero.

I thought that part of the movie was funny. The nurse was kind of talking down to the woman saying "Do you speak English?" I think that was the point since the movie was dealing with racial tension. Don't assume that b/c a woman is Asian she can't speak english.
