NURS 4455 Leadership and Management

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Anyone else starting this class on 4/8? I looked all through the boards, and only found one thread about this class and it was not helpful. I'm guessing we would need to shadow someone in management for this course.

Just another course I can't wait to be done with.

Yes. Did you submit your attestation statement? In order for week 1 to open you must do that first.

I am having a hard time understanding what we are supposed to be doing for this shadow plan. Does any one have any idea?

I'm confused on that one too. I just did my shadow. I tried to make sure I got in on a lot of manager stuff, and asked lots of questions I found on the Organizational Analysis assignment for week 3. I attended a meeting, sat in on an interview, sat in on a confernce call, and watched her deal with some scheduling issues.

Does anyone know what the week one Situational Analysis is? I'm thinking it is a timed essay. I have to do it today as I work this weekend, but I am nervouse about opening it.

Not timed but short essay form. Don't stress it, it's pretty easy!

Is anyone else having problems getting someplace to let you shadow there? I am pretty much at the point where I'm giving up. My coach has been aware of the problem I'm having but no real support from the school. It is really frustrating that I graduated from my ADN program in May 2012 and not only do I still not have a job (looking since March 2012), but I can't even find a shadowing position for a few hours. Really makes me wonder why I bothered going into nursing in the first place when I'm never going to actually get my foot in the door anywhere. I wonder what the instructor has people in my situation do? Guess I'll find out soon enough.

I'm sorry you of to deal with this... I'm surprise you cannot find a shadowing experience. Have you looked at clinic or urgency care center?

Thanks for easing my mind. I just finished it. It took me and hour and forty-five minutes, but it wasn't hard.

I can see how it would be hard if you aren't working in a medical facility. Have you tried asking the DON at any of the nursing homes near you? Just a thought. What about any friends from school that are working? Could they help you set something up?

Since I haven't lived in my area very long and didn't go to school here I don't have any nursing contacts but most places will only let employees or students from local schools that already have affiliation agreements shadow. I even tried places 3 hours away without luck. This is actually one of the few times I wish I was still in my old state since I have lots of contacts there and it seems like places aren't as strict as they are out here. Still waiting to hear what my alternative assignment will be.

Specializes in Operating Room.

You might suggest a phone interview with previous contacts to your AC. I know they want some observations, but interviews can be real informative as a last resort.

If you are on Arizona I may know of some...also I would suggest email the professors + head of coaches. Even if you are waiting on a response it is still your responsibility to get assignments in on time ( I learned this the hard way)

Specializes in Emergency.

I did not specifically shadow a nurse leader. The rubic states that you have to observe and document 3 nursing leadership actions and support with literature. I just used my nurse manager, informally. Observed effective communication in a staff meeting, witnessed conflict resolution about the unit, etc. I did let this person know that I was writing about them and asked them specific questions....like their background, education, and leadership theories and styles, but no formal shadowing.
