NP providing Rx across state lines?

Total hypothetical here -

Often a physician will call in an antibiotic for a family member, sometimes across state lines. Would a NP in Arizona for instance, be able to call in a Rx for their brother in Utah (or any other combo of states)?

Legal?

Lets hear your thoughts.

I always do, why wouldn't you call in rx for antibiotics?

If someone calls in and has symptoms that indicate a possible need for antibiotics - I make them come in for examinaton. For instance: sore throat. Many are viral. No, I'm not going to treat your daughter for strep just because you want me to. You can come in, let me exam her, do a rapid strep or throat culture as appropriate in the office, etc.

I cannot think of being in one office where it was a common practice to call out antibiotics. Maybe peds is different, but I thought this was good practice across the board.

I work with renal patients and even I don't arbitarily give antibiotics w/o exam.

As to prescribing across state lines. Almost all of my pts have Medicare and many use mail-in script service. I often send stuff across state lines. As long as I'm writing them in my home state, its okay.

I think this is probably where technology is moving faster than the law....

With the federal government pushing for all things be computer generated this is probably going to be the norm instead of the exception.

Kind of strange that one isn't supposed to call a prescription over state lines but can do technically the same thing electronically...

I did not mean to suggest I would call in antibiotics without an examination. I do call in antibiotics to another state after an exam. for example the antibiotic I rx for a UTI is resistant on the sensitivity, I call the Pharmacy in state or out of state
