NOW what?? Terrified...

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hello All,

Its hard to even write this out.... I just became an RN in Florida after 15 years of being an LPN. I'm prescribed percocet and Soma for the past 4 year due to back and neck issues. While going through orientation my supervisor notice I was a little sleepy and had me take a drug test at the hospital (blood sample as I could not make enough urine). I was sent home and pulled of the schedule pending the results. This all went down early a few days ago. Now I know that THC is going to show up on my drug screen as well as the meds I'm prescribed. I get why my supervisor pulled me off and drug tested me and understand there are consequences for my actions. What I know nothing about is what the next steps will be? Will I get fired? Will they send me to IPN and put me back on the schedule once I finish? Will they let me work anywhere else as a RN while I go through the program? How expensive is the program? I just feel so lost right now.....

@KyBeagle I have not gotten back any results yet and I’m wondering if I should call HR? I got my blood drawn at 4 pm last Monday 10/1. Any thoughts?

If they pulled you off the schedule, pending the results, then yes, I would call on Friday. Based on the length of time you’ve been waiting, they must have sent the blood to an outside lab for testing. Regardless, of a send out or not, I would think the bloodwork would result in 9-10 days. Of course, they may already have the test results & are discussing how to proceed to the next step (whatever that may be).

Best of luck! Keep us updated!

What is your employer's policy on marijuana? Granted I am in California, where pot is legal, but I worked for an FQHC and we were told they didn't care if providers screened positive for pot.

Hey guys,

I went into a meeting with my director Superviser and a person from HR and was told my drug test was positive... they said they are not told what I’m positive for.... them stated that I asked another employee for their urine because I new I was going to come back positive for something And terminated me gross misconduct due to trying to falsify my results.... they stated that the legal department is going to decide whether or not they are going to tell the board of nursing..... does anyone know if they would offer me IPN or tell me to report myself before they contact the board of nursing?

Thanks again for all your help

This one you are probably going to have to wait out like I did. You can still work like I did as long as your license shows up active on your board of nursing website. I wouldn’t talk to a board investigator without a lawyer. I did and I regret it . I spilled my guts to the investigator thinking they would understand. They are not there to help nurses. It only took a couple of months for me to beet from the board after I was reported. But then after I talked to god board investigator it took 3 1/2 years and I still worked all that time. I now have a board contract so I’m in the disciplinary section of monitoring . Thank God my DON is vey understanding and I am working while I’m on probation . Thankfully my license is active with no restrictions- except I can’t work over 88 hrs in a 2 week period. Hell I can’t work overtime anyway because I have to attend 3 AA meetings a week and have random drug screens. I will be so glad when my 2 years are up, I just got started 3 weeks ago.

Good luck! Are you currently working
