I start my new job July 12th, and I am VERY excited. However, I'm also quite terrified. We have to fill out a skills checklist and I am scared I will be the only one who's never done certain things, and have so little experience, that they'll just send me packing. I've never put in a Foley catheter... tried once in the ER but the tube was too big (ow), and then the instructor just took over and did it. I've never done any phlebotomy... wasn't allowed to hang blood... never suctioned a patient... never worked with anyone with a G-tube, or a chest tube for that matter... never irrigated a colostomy, or done peritoneal dialysis. I don't even KNOW what else will be on the list. I feel hideously unprepared.
HALP! Anyone else going/ gone through this?

Good luck!! Yep, right now we're getting a lot of posts about NCLEX. In a couple of months it will be the "I'm so overwhelmed" posts. LOL You'll be wonderful!

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling very unprepared. I have never drawn blood or started an IV and am having nightmares I will be expected to do so and will look like a complete horses-a--. I feel like I spent the last 18 months wiping hiney's and yea I'm pretty good at that but anything more technical..forget it!!
Please send help!!
Oh I'm so glad you feel that way too... I graduated from UVA's 2nd degree BSN program, which means I only had two med-surg clinicals- GI and oncology. I'm going into oncology, so at least I have some experience in it, but I think in a way studying for NCLEX made it worse!! All these procedures and diseases I never, ever heard of... I feel like all the other grads will be running circles around me!
Well, at least there's two of us. :)

all of that takes practice and time, but you will get there! i started out being an lpn on a busy medical floor and was terrified.... but now putting foley's in and working with trach's is nothing but a daily routine to me...... depending on where you work , some places have iv teams... nurses that go around to all the floors all day long and all they do is put iv's in people.. its actually very nice! it's always scary when your the "new" person but you'll get the hang of it.... you've gotten this far!!! :)
