Not NLNAC Accredited school cause problems later??

Published

I am looking to go to a private college called Career Training Solutions here in Fredericksburg, VA for either their LPN or new RN program. However they are only accredited by the VA state board of nursing and not nationally by NLNAC. Should this be a concern of mine because I would like to move out of VA eventually, will this cause problems when it comes to obtaining my license in another state or getting a job?? Also will it cause problems if I'd like to go back to school for my BSN eventually??

Thanks for any help! Oh also, if there are any students who go to CTS for eithert of these programs I'd like to hear from you...any opinions, etc. of this school!

I think that it would create problems for you. Why don't you just go to NVCC? I know it is a bit of a drive all the way from Fredricksburg but you can take many of the classes online, until you enter the program.

First of all you have to ask yourself, would it be worth it going to a school that might create problems for you down the road?

Say, for example, that you graduated and got your RN license, and decided to go to George Mason's accelerated program for RNs. Most graduate schools have prerequisite requirements even if you are a RN, that most likely will not transfer from a non-accredited school.

I have looked into NVCC as well as Germanna but how long do you typically wait to actually receive entrance into the program??

Well it is different for everyone. They have a list of prerequisites, some of which you may or may not have completed during high school. You can complete all of them in less that a year and be ready to apply to the traditional program by next year! There are 3 or 4 different programs. You should check out their site.

Feel free to ask me any more questions. I love to help people. I didn't get much help so I know how it feels to be lost.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Not all schools choose to go for NLN accreditation, which can be time-consuming and expensive. As long as they have approval of the state BON, that's what's important. Although I would stay away from a new program that has a "provisional" BON approval, unless it's just a new program from a well-established school.

I just did a search for RN jobs at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, probably the biggest health system around here and definitely choosy about their nurse credentials. The ads just stated that you had to have a BSN and a Pennsylvania license. Not a peep about your school being NLN-accredited.

If you're concerned, look at the job listings around your area. Or better yet, call the HR department and ask if they require NLN accreditation. I'm betting they don't.

Why don't you head on over to the Virginia boards and ask them, It seems dead around there lately but it wouldn't hurt.

As far as LPN goes I am sure it wouldn't matter. However if your goal ultimately is to work your way up the degree ladder, I wouldn't waste my time with a non-community college, or university. Because once you do transfer to a university your credits won't transfer.

It could be a problem or it may not be...it just depends on what your future needs are.

If you want to get a BSN...some colleges require the school to be NLN accredited, some don't. Online colleges do not for sure.

You won't have a problem finding a job, they only care if you have a license. My school is pretty new and they cannot get accredited by the NLN yet, but all of the 1st graduating class have jobs paying good money in the area.

Hi Angel I read another post of yours that you go to Global.

I am interested in attending Global for their RN program. I am confident their program will become NLNAC accredited as well due to the fact that their LPN program is.

Do you take the day classes? I'm interested in what the schedule is for them (i.e. Monday-Friday 9-3, etc.) Also I read somewhere on here someone saying there's a wait to get into night classes for the LPN program, was this the same for you?? Lastly how much is the tuition for the RN program? It showed how much it was per credit hour on the website but didn't give an actual tuition amount like it did for the others. I would need to take all the pre-reqs. And is getting in difficult? Thanks for any help!!

Hi..I just responded to your other post, but let me know if you have any other questions.

Specializes in Cardiac Nursing.

I just had a problem that came up because my school is not NLN accredited. I applied for a job, was told they would be calling back to set up a time for me to come for an interview. They then called the next day to say they couldn't go through with the interview because my school is not on the list of NLN or CCNE accredited schools. So it COULD cause you a problem and not just for continuing on to get your BSN. Granted it could be the one hospital, but I've noticed all hospitals say "must be graduated of accredited program". Which accreditation do they count as accredited I have no idea. My school does have accreditation btw, just not NLN.

Wow..that's messed up..I haven't heard of that happening before. Do you live in the DC area? Can you share which hospital if so..I will not be applying there I guess. The graduates of my school work at Wash Hosp Center and 2 of the INOVAS. One student that came in during orientation had several offers right after graduation.

Try IUON at St. Kitts in the Carribean. No waiting time and the cost is comparable to schools in the states.
