Not Accepted to Nursing School! :(... Alternative!

Published

Well, I've already applied to nursing school at the Palm Beach State College, but was denied acceptance to the school. So now I have a lot of free time on my hands. I was declined due to insufficient amount of points. I had 22 they required that I have 26.13 to even be considered for a spot. Seeing that I have already taken all of my Pre-Reqs for the RN Program, I was thinking of taking some of the General Education Courses classes that are required for the BSN Program seeing that I do plan on going on to get my BSN. I'm thinking if this is possible? Can I take some classes for the BSN program even though I have not been accepted into the RN program? I am doing this to raise my GPA for the RN Program (I already completed my Procalc, and plan on taking the Hesi again) and to meet the requirements for the BSN program as well. Reminder: these classes are part of the General Education Courses, not the Core classes.

Of course you can. Find out what the BSN Gen Ed core is, find comparative classes that the BSN-granting institution consider equivalent (even talk to the BSN's school to find out where they accept credits from or to see if the classes you're interested in will fulfill their electives/required courses), and sign up.

Just be sure they transfer appropriately, or the time, effort, and money will have been for nought.

(Also see how old credits can be before the BSN-granting school won't accept them. If they have a limited shelf life, and some do, you might want to rethink your strategy. Typically some math and a lot of science credits expire within five years, so ask that question as well.)

Thank you carolinapooch for responding back to my post. Actually the BSN program is the one being offered in the same school that I am hopefully thinking about taking the RN program in. Palm Beach now offers Bachelor programs in the school. So I am thankful for that. I would talk to an advisor, but last time I did that they were of no help. They were basically trying to deter me from going to the RN program and settling for something lesser. I really didn't appreciate the fact that someone who is suppose to be there to help you along your dreams and goals was making me feel like a incompetent.

Thank your for your help.

Have a good day! :)

Note that there is no such thing as an "RN program." RN is a licensure granted by the state after the graduate of an approved nursing school passes the NCLEX. This means that if the BSN is your first nursing degree, that's when you would take NCLEX. You could also take NCLEX after an ADN/ASN program or a diploma program (these last vanishingly rare and not recommended).

By all means take as many courses as you can to bolster your application to the BSN program, bearing in mind the possibility of time limits as carolinapooh mentioned.

GrnTea, thanks for correcting me. I guess I would have to say the Nursing program at my school. I have made up my mind to take the classes either in the fall of spring. I'll also keep in mind of the time frame as well.

To both GrnTea, and carolinapooh, thanks for all of your help! :)

Can you apply directly into the BSN program, or is it an RN to BSN program?

...You could also take NCLEX after an ADN/ASN program or a diploma program (these last vanishingly rare and not recommended)...

GT?! I know diploma programs are rare but ADN programs are more than plentiful!

Misplaced modifier, my bad. Of course ADN/ASN programs are plentiful. It's the diploma programs that are vanishing.

MrsBabs ,

I think it is a great idea for you to start taking some other courses in the mean time!... PBSC allows you to apply a couple of times a year so maybe by the next application timeframe you could bring your score up....

I am going to be a new student at PBSC and need to take about a year of prereq's before I can even apply to the nursing program.. I have been out of school for about 2 years so I am very nervous yet excited to return!

If you don't mind me asking, where did you loose points? (I am familar with their points system.)

Thanks.

From my experience, advisors are terrible for the most part... so if there is a teacher you know who is "in the know" at the school you would want to attend you will probably have much more luck talking to them.

As far as the whole getting accepted thing.. supposedly the health care changes are going to require all RNs to eventually have BSNs.. soooo, you are probably saving yourself time and money if you go ahead and try finishing everything before getting into the program anyway.

If I don't get into the program this fall, I'm probably just going to start taking classes to go towards my BSN.

Of course you can! Have you thought of even retaking some courses that you got below a B in? That may not even apply to you, but it definitely helped me. I'm sorry you didn't get in, but don't give up if nursing is your dream!!! Good luck!! :)

Why don't you apply to IRSC too? It's a commute but it may be worth it
