North Shore LIJ ED/NICU/PICU Fellowship 2013

U.S.A. New York

Hello Everyone!

I have recently interviewed for the ED/NICU/PICU Fellowship at NSLIJ and I wanted to get some feedback about the program from past or recent nurses in the same program. Also, it would be nice to connect to other applicants out there who are going through the process!

How did your interview go? They told me they only pick 10 candidates so let's keep our fingers crossed!! Sounds like an amazing experience and I'm so grateful to had the chance to interview.

Good luck and keep me posted!

That sounds great! Thank you guys. Was there a head-to-toe assessment as part of the interview? I read that in some other threads.

And don't lose hope guys, they seem to have a few different fellowships on the horizon at North Shore, so you never know!

I've also applied to many positions through NSLIJ, of course would love to receive an interview for the fellowship positions. I just graduated last week, so have not taken the boards yet so not sure if that has something to do with not receiving any calls. Just curious, Did you just apply online and they called you for an interview or did you go into their corporate headquarters with your cover letter resume? How long after you applied did they call you for the interview? Do you have your RN license yet? Thanks for the help and good luck with getting the job (and congrats on landing an interview)!

No, no assessment questions! I also read the old thread and I thought they would hit me with the question...but no! :)

Hi kjm84,

I think you need the license because the fellowship starts July 8 and they will make a decision by June 7. I applied online and a week later they contacted me for an interview.

Hi Kemifair!

The fellowship consists of basically 6-12 months training in pediatric ED/NICU/PICU all combined together to prepare you as a float RN in all these departments. If you are chosen, and they only pick 10 candidates, you basically need to be committed to them for about 3 years (6-12 training plus 2 years work commitment). Sounds like an amazing experience so I am glad I had a chance to interview. I am a new graduate with a BSN.

Rn can u tell me where u applied, I am interested.

Ok thanks. You can actually get a temporary permit to work before you've taken the NCLEX, costs $35, but it must be signed by the employer before they issue it. I know many nurses that worked before taking the NCLEX, just asking specifically if you had received a call before taking the NCLEX. I don't think too many employers hire post graduation/pre license anymore. Guess you answered my question though and you have your license :)

If you fail the NCLEX and are working with a temporary permit you can no longer work until you're successful at passing.

I applied on the North Shore LIJ website. I was watching it like a hawk and as soon as it went up I applied. It's down now, but they will have other ones coming in the fall I think. So keep an eye on the website! Search for any new grad positions and opportunity because sometimes it is posted as fellowship or new grad opportunity. Good luck!

Don't discourage nightingal82! I was on the same boat and took my boards in february!

For 3 months straight I applied non-stop and finally landed 1 interview in April (which I did not get) and 3 in May (2 of which turned into offers...yayyy!). Just keep persevering and know that many are exactly in the same situation. I am just staying put right now and trying to decide which one to accept, of course my heart is on this fellowship :)

Hi rn, I have a bsn to but I am not a new graduate but can I still do the fellowship.

I don't think they are taking anymore applicants for this fellowship since they are making the decision by June 7. I know there was over 300 applicants which they narrowed down to about 30-25 for an actual interview. But don't worry! I'm sure there are other fellowships in the fall though. I applied once it was posted and got an email and a phone call about a week and a half later. Just keep checking the site at constantly cause they only post it for a short amount of time.

Not sure if you need any experience but I do have RN experience. I think if you have some kind of experience, whether volunteer or an externship it would really help a lot. Oh and they didn't ask me for a head to toe assessment either! Just behavioral questions and past experiences. Good luck everyone! Don't give up and just keep looking! It took me a whole year to land my first job but if you're really passionate about nursing then everything will be worth it! :)

Hey rnmj,

I know it's an ED/PICU/NICU fellowship, but is the ED portion pediatrics or both peds/adults?

Thanks!

Hi asat,

Yes it's all peds! I wished they could mix peds and adults but I'm pretty sure the whole fellowship is geared towards peds only.

Kemifair - like nurse_sian said, I don't think you can apply for this around anymore, but keep your eyes open for the next to come.
