Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

how are the other nontraditional students doing in their classes?

31, married, 2.5 year old and a 5 month old, second semester with 14 credit hours.

4.0 first semester (only had 2 classes though). I'm sitting at around A/B in pretty much all classes right now at 6 weeks in. I expect I can finish out the semester with As and/or Bs. Which I am beyond thrilled with. I've been struggling with postpartum depression (on an antidepressant that I keep forgetting because of my schedule).

I kind of feel like I'm going in 20 different directions. I've never been more exhausted than I am now (not even just school and home, but taking care of finances and bills - very low income, so the worring about everything getting paid -, my appointments, appointments for the kids - my 5 month old has bad reflux, so it's been a nightmare -).

I'm very fortunate in that my husband pulls more weight than I can even imagine. I'm starting to find the right balance at home. I can now juggle studying/homework and relieving him of the kids for an hour or two throughout the day and night so he can get a bit of a break (as it can be absolutely taxing, especially when both kids are crabby). I'm starting to get our meal schedules down so it's more time efficient.

All in all, as hard as it all feels, I feel like I'm doing well and am truly happy with life and how things are going. I know it's all going to be worth it in the end.

KThurmond: you are so very awesome for disclosing your health challenges! I think and hope you'll be an inspiration to others!

Your bravery has inspired me: I have depression and anxiety, secondary to PTSD.

Within the last 14 mos, I have also been diagnosed with IBS, they said due to stress and a gastric ulcer secondary to H pylori.

Yet, look at us! We continue on! We persevere toward our goals! MI won't stop us!

Non-traditional student here (waving). I'm a 42-year old former college drop-out (due to a lot of things outside my control but - still not something I'm proud of) with 3 kids (ages 22, 19 and 15). My 19year-old is also a medically fragile kiddo so it was an easy thing to put all of my focus on her (plus the mountain of medical bills) and ignore the nagging feeling that I needed to go back to school. I'm currently in what is hopefully my last pre-req class before I apply for the local nursing program this August. So far I've managed A's in both Micro and A/P I and it helps that I'm only taking one class at a time - not to mention that I'm able to leave my family to their own devices a lot more than usual because hey, they have thumbs and can nuke their own Ramen, mama's studying right now lol! I do feel the fatigue from lack of sleep quite a bit more than I did in my "glory days" but, I'm also a lot more driven than many of my younger classmates who don't think twice about missing class on a Wednesday morning because of a hang-over. Insane right?!

*wavey* 29 with 2 kids, work from home part time, school full time, hubby works night. Got a B+ last semester and it's my goal again for this semester!

In OB and it's going by so fast! The sole reason I am going to school and already only 2 clinical days left (12 hours).

There was a hospital recruiting at my school. It blows my mind that this time next year I could potentially already have a job secured before I graduate in May!

That's amazing, how nice would it be to come out of school with a job! I have two kids, and am hoping I'm accepted into my program in the fall. My goal is to work in L&D. How are you liking OB so far?

It's ummmm, interesting. I've been at NICU, postpartum, and watched a section. I have yet to labor with a patient or watch a lady partsl birth. Drives me batty because I am a trained doula and haven't been at a lady partsl birth in well over 2 years. Had my first test last week and did really well for not having studied at all, but I'm a bit of an L&D nerd already, bwahahaha.

How are we not friends? I'm a trained doula, and am a L&D nerd as well. I could literally talk about birth and birth related topics all day and never get bored.

All day every day for hours!

My daughters are the main reason I decided to go into nursing! I'm in my 8th year as a full-time teacher. I was so frustrated with my job, even after I changed districts last year, that it was changing who I was -- I was always angry, exhausted, or doing paperwork. I didn't want to be that kind of mom. So I hope to start nursing school part-time in the fall, at age 38, and just the thought of the change has made me happier and more energetic! (Still have to do the paperwork, though...)

You will most likely still be exhausted too...nursing is usually a very physical job

Nothing like having your online course website go down the last week of a unit when you have a chapter to finish and an exam due, which also happens to be the week before you take the TEAS (and one you were hoping to spend focusing on TEAS prep), and then finding out your youngest has her 6th or 7th double ear infection in 11 months and needs to see an ENT about that, her adenoids, and the shape of her uvula. :roflmao: Gotta laugh to keep from crying!

Non traditional here..... 3 rd term .... doing one online elective class this term.. I still have 5 courses more to get done before nursing school... high gpa... I just wish I was doing 2 courses than just one... I homeschool .. so its only 2 max courses a term... next term... I think ill take 2 courses online and knock 2 courses out of the way.... im doing an elective and im bored out of my mind... I think electives are useless...

Hello,

I am looking for advice and information. I am interested in attending ECPI Charlotte for the RN program but would like to hear from someone who has done the RN program there.
