No need to be upset at the truth! Change careers

Nurses Relations

Published

One thing that has baffled me on this website is individuals always are up in arms when the truth is, if you have no passion for the profession you need to make life decisions for yourself. Most individuals come on allnurses.com to complain about the nursing profession, long hours, nursing staff, arrogant doctors. The truth is, this is not Mcdonalds where you work the job because it's a requirement for survival. You entered into college and chose a profession that makes you miserable, spent countless hours studying a subject that you have no interest in, and entered the work field to make others who are passionate about their careers miserable. Yet, many complain that the healthcare field has taken a turn for the worse. Has it ever occurred to those same individuals, if there was no passion for the career to begin with there would be none after starting your first, second, third, or even tenth position?

Maybe it's my family values that taught me, if I don't love what I do there is no way I will ever be successful in life. Success is not defined by the basic salary, but level of contentment with my life all together.

So I say, if you hate nursing make life decisions so the rest of us can enjoy our jobs.

"Like" if you read all pages thus far.

I respect every professional who has the guts to care for another life form..dvm, md, rn, rvt, ma, np, lvn, the list goes on :) caring for someone or something is a difficult job, full of grief, triumph, burden and reward. I have been priviledged to experience it thus far the last fifteen years of my career. I hope somehow, I will find a preceptor or mentor who will recognize that in me, willingly share their amazing depth and knowledge :) i have learned alot from this board, and those who post here.

Now-i will return to the lurk-dom from whence i came because MAN you people are scary :p

clearly double chemo is an amazing person -- we're not all that perfect. you'll understand this when you're old enough to have dealt with some real problems of your own, but sometimes we just cannot leave our personal problems outside the door. some people always have personal problems that they cannot leave at the door; i'm not addressing that. but there are nurses who have personal problems that they're dealing with that you do not even begin to understand. not everything can be left behind so easily, nor should it be.
absolutely.

I for one must state that this is a second career for me and I absolutely love it! Does the staff I work with stink? You betcha! But not all of them. I have to concentrate on the beautiful staff that make my job, career, enjoyable. Besides, as a Christian, it is real easy to love someone who loves you, but try being kind, caring, and loving to someone that can care less about you patients and staff!! Therefore, I pray, God help me not to cuss no one out and provide care as if my very life depended on it! LOL!

But seriously, sometimes I can't believe they pay me for doing what I do. Most of the time I really, really, love it. Maybe because I enjoy helping people, especially the "underdog". :twocents:

As someone who has had other professions and obtained the degrees that went along with them....I personally get tired of the, "why on earth would you leave the ________ career to be a nurse?! if i could do that or anything else i certainly would!"

well, uh....you certainly CAN. i went through college to be credentialed in other fields. just because it took a long time to get through school, etc, etc. doesn't mean you HAVE to stick with that profession no matter what. i know from experience...i went to school AGAIN (as many people do) in order to become a nurse. i still have the debt from degrees i don't even use now to prove it. let's see....would i rather be doing a job i enjoy and paying a debt for a degree i'm not using OOOOR stay in a job i hate and pay the debt for that. either way, you're going to be paying. the price is much higher if you're unhappy IMO.

i don't care if someone wants to be miserable in a job they hate. i just wish they would quit acting like they have no other options because that's the degree they got and that's what they've been doing for 10 years...or whatever the excuse may be. either get out or at LEAST give up on trying to make every enthusiastic young (or old) new nurse feel your disdain. nobody is making you stay.

I am not implying you are a terrible human being if nursing provides you a sense of security financially. Would I volunteer to nurse if my bills were behind, probably so. But, I would also have another place of employment. Would I run off to get an accounting degree tomorrow because they are now in high demand & well compensated, absolutely not! This is the logic I can't understand about some individuals. They're so fickle to whatever is paying well, and never finding security in the basis of the passion.

Nursing today, accounting tomorrow, computers next week, and a pilot next year!!

One second you're encouraging unhappy people to leave the field, the next second you're trashing people who leave their field too often. So fickle.

People need to make life choices for your personal job happiness. But not TOO many life choices, or that annoys you as well.

I don't know if I can ever live up to your expectations.

I was an enthusiatic young new nurse, now I know LTC is a money-maker and nurses there are basically abused and patient care is as basic as it comes and I could never be happy doing that kind of nursing. Why? Because it feels unsafe, unfair, and too stressful. Now I am enthusiastic and excited about my new job which I hope is safer and less distressing than my last one. Nursing IS for me, because I honestly care about patients and enjoy caring for them, but not when I feel like I'm being treated poorly and patient care suffers for the sake of less staff and more profits.

You know, its real easy to pass judgement on a message board to people you may or may not know. I sense that I have been "trolled" by usage of :) to soften your blow, but my dear, it has failed. I clearly understand your point of view as many others who have spoken thus far. It was my intention to get the "whole picture" of opinions in this thread and not cast judgement on others and what they believe to be true. Since, you have lured me out of my "lurk-dom" to make a statement, as many others are doing right below, I will just say for the record that you are entitled to your opinion just as much as I am to mine. I made a light-hearted phrase as a humorous gesture, and out of nowhere you found offense in it and felt the need to reiterate your case. Fine. That's fine. I do hope you find what you are looking for in this world and it brings you true happiness. Because, you are right...people are scary and this is a scary world and time we live in. So, I suggest if you find my words offensive and wish to not read more from me? The ignore button is right up top. ^

Thanks. :)

Poster....i have to chuckle at this....i sincerely meant no offense, but i am on my cell phone, and new to the interface, so it was easier to just his reply too....rather that find the initiate a new post. My statement was a general joke, lighthearted comment, just as much as yours was, never interpreted it as otherwise :) sorry if it came across that way. I am not easily offended, nor do like to insult for no good reason

Thank you I'm new here

I just want to say that I got into nursing because I knew that it would pay my bills and might possibly let me meet a hot rich MD. It would be just like Grey's Anatomy! I'd say the crap that I have to put with pales in comparison to those perks!
