Mental health will be my second to last rotation and theory course.

Thus far I've completed all the foundations, health assessment, pharmacology, and all the med surg (I II & III). Just finished my ICU rotation last week... I'm gonna miss it ),:

I have peds/obs and psych/management left! Woo!

Survival for medsurg depends on your preferred style of learning. I tried tables, I tried old school notes with bullets and sub headings, I tried flash cards.

I finally realized the way I personally learn best is getting messy. Its destroying my medsurg book with my personal thoughts and what I'm provoked to think if I were a nurse. I write all over, highlight, and draw.

When you read... Read interactively. Think as you read. When you read the pathophys (I want you to think; so if they're deficient in this hormone... Is there a hormone replacement?) When you read symptoms, I want you to think (oh they have tachycardia? They might need a beta blocker to reduce HR and what are nursing actions I can independently do? Maybe tell them to bare down? Valsalva maneuver? To relax and take deep breaths? ... Or "Oh fever increases intracranial pressure?" What are nursing actions to reduce a fever? A wet cloth? A fan? Taking off the covers?)

Read interactively!!! Don't worry about understanding what I mentioned above, you will eventually learn about that.

But to translate it to everyday day terms ... Say youre reading a story about Sally. Sally ran out of coffee filters (at this moment you should be critically thinking what she could do. Maybe use a paper towel as a filter?) etc.

Don't be afraid to think as you read!

I also drew out maps of the diseases/disorders.

At the top I write the disese and I will draw arrows pointing down toward the pathophysiology, here I draw out or write the patho and then I drawore arrows pointing down and you will learn that the patho itself contributes to the signs and symptoms so I would draw an arrow to the part of the patho that corresponds best with the symptom. Finally I draw ore arrows bellow the treatment (both medical and nursing/nutrition) and try to connect to what symptom or part of the pathology is being fixed or alleviated.

Finally on the side I write out the misc info (risk factors and statistics)

Absolutely awesome!!! I love this website!!! Everyone so freely gives out info.

We're all I'm it together!! Whew, that was a lot but I get it. Thx again!!

I have a Word folder I copy/paste all the useful advice into. I'm sure I will refer to it constantly! You can always bookmark the threads you like here on AN, but copy/paste to a word doc is really quick when you need some advice/inspiration. Thanks to everyone who's been there/done that and doesn't mind sharing!

Isn't it great to be on the "new" forum? I still reply in the Pre-Nursing forum, but I find that I read more posts on this one now that I'm a (soon-to-be) nursing student :D
