No longer a nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I posted a similar topic under Geriatrics/LTC in specialties - but I'd like to hear from more nurses their opinion so am posting just this part here. My facility has decided that all LPNs and RNs' will no longer be known as 'Nurses' but 'Care Coordinators,' in the spirit of culture change. It's thought that this will make our facility more 'homelike.' It makes me want to quit.

Please weigh in. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm so disgusted right now.

Or have the residents call the nurses "Mom".

That's definitely more homelike and comforting.

...I'm known as "Ms. Mary"...very comforting to my confused resident..."Mom" is not that far away...

I vote for Mom :-)

To me, the term "care coordinator" implies the management of care or the planning of care. ie Plan of care. Unless things have changed, only RN's can do this.

OP, your management is either too far detached from the reality that nurses and patients are in, or they are laying the groundwork down for future shady moves.

Yeah, an unlicensed caregiver in assisted living is really a "care coordinator" and a burger flipper at Mcdonalds is really a "food preparation specialist".

Fancy new job titles for everyone!

NO, burger flippers at fast food joints are called "grill master technicians" it is the line cooks that are the "food preparation specialists".

I think some are also referred to as chefs..

They want to call us anything, but the professional title we've earned.

This is the kind of idiocy that professional nursing organizations such as ANA have been lobbying against for decades, so that nurses get some measure of professional recognition, however modest.

If it weren't for the nursing organizations, corporate leadership in this country would have reduced us to the status of lowly serfs, and our wages would have been on par with Burger King...
