unless you are tied to your home, perhaps look into psych nurse travel

Welcome to allnurses!!
Don't know what to tell you, except that "persistance pays off". I mean, if there actually are positions open and employers aren't calling you, call them. Call them and ask "Yes, I just wanted to check on the status of the staff RN position on the Sigmund Freud unit". Call a couple of times. Send "thank you" letters after interviews.
After 37 years of working experience, surely I'm not telling you things that you don't already know! Unless you are from an area that is so heavily in demand of psych nurses that it is THAT easy to find a job as one! If so, you must be from my neck of the woods because psych nurses actually ARE fairly in demand around here.
Otherwise, have you considered trying another area of nursing for a while? I realize that you get used to a somewhat slower pace in psych nursing; maybe try LTC?
Working in a doctor's office?
Anyways, good luck!

Why not per diem at several places allowing you to make up your required shifts and it also allows you to work the hrs. you want. Also nurse agencies in the area.

Thanks for your reply. Right now I'm getting unemployment from my last job so I would need to take home at least what I'm getting from that and per diem you're not garrenteed shifts;and the nursing agencies here are looking for nurse's to work in the specialities like ER or ICU and that is definitely not me. I really do appreciate your response though, thank you for taking the time Spirit08

Thanks for your reply to my question. Yes, I have made the f/u calls several times to get the same response---- the manager will call if interested. As forthe Thank Yous, yes, of course. As far as LTF they also require experience with that type of patient. Guess,I'll just keep pluggin. Thank you for your time Spirit08

Thanks for your reply. As a matter of fact I have started to explore that option of traveling. Depending on the state, getting licensure can be either easily done or it can be a real process. Anyway, thank you for your time. Spirit08

Have you seen if there are any private treatment centers around that are less well known? What about psych clinic work? Any psychiatrists office needing nurses? What if you just send out a great letter and resume to a psych dr office and see what happens? What about MHMR (mental health mental retardation) clinics. Here in TX they are affiliated with the state health dept. Anything like that up there? What about insurance work? I have seen insurance companies that need psych nurses.

If travel is an option, I'd suggest checking out Supplemental Health Care. They kinda specialize in psych nursing placement so they probably have more options than other travel companies. I travelled with them and now my wife does (except as a tele nurse); and we're pretty happy with them.
RN1989, Thank you for your time responding,I greatly appreciate it. I will look into the private treatment facilities--I actually didn't think of them;there as to be a few around here some place. I also like the thought of MD offices who knows-I'll com pose a letter and get it out. I thought of Ins. Co. but not in that way, justifying LOS for Psych pts. may also be a way to go.Again,I truely appreciate your suggestions! Spirit08
PsychRN03, Thank you for taking the time to respond again,I really appreciate it. I will check out your health care suggestion. Spirit08

Hard to believe NY has an over supply of psych nurses. We are so short of them in NZ.
Have you thought of having a 2 year break and coming to the otherside of the world.
