If we have such a shortage of nurses then why are there not more evening classes offered for RN's and LPN's I have about exhausted all routes because there jus isnt any available in the Richmond area. There are no LPN evening classes unless you go to Medical Carreer Institutes which is $26k for the year and their evening RN program is 80K. What is wrong with this picture? I cant give up my FT job to go to school during the day as I am a single parent with a mortgage and bills. Something needs to be done about this. If you need nurses then you need the programs.:angryfire

I'm not sure but I think that Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing offers an evening program in the fall. I am starting in January and they only offer day classes, but my friend started in the fall and she attends night classes. And someone told me that in the fall they offer both day and night classes.

Schools would LOVE to have more classes, but who is going to teach them???? I believe the minimum requirement for a professor is a Masters degree. And most schools don't pay a lot of $$$$.

I wish I could have found a part time program or evening program for nursing. I also work, and was not able to cut down as much as I wanted to.
At my school I did the online program. While I still had to attend clinical and labs on campus during the day, it did allow me to work fewer hours. I used to listen to lecture online while at my desk at work (this was ok for me because I am an IT worker, it may be different for those in different fields). That said, it became too much to manage and this semester I do lectures at home. I still work 30 hours, so I was able to cut down, but this is the fewest number of hours I can work and keep my health insurance.
Just try and get info on alternate format nursing programs. It's true there is a lack of weekend and evening programs, but it can be done in other formats too.

A few of the Virginia Community colleges offer a weekend/night part-time ADN program. Keep on looking around.
Marymount University (in Arlington) also offers a part-time ABSN (well, not that accellerated since it is part-time).
Most of the public nursing programs in Virginia are under strong requests from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State Commission for Higher Education in Virginia to graduate as many RNs as possible. If a school is limited in its enrollments, it can graduate more RNs in less time by requiring full-time enrollment. These programs are operating at capacity, so do not need to enroll part-time students to fill their classes.
Flames9 is also right -- many schools could grow if they had more faculty. Nursing faculty are not high paying positions (they are all MSN- or doctorally prepared individuals and earn less than their counterparts who practice 100%). BON guidelines also keep clinical sections at a 10:1 student/instructor ratio (or less). Increasing this ratio higher (one idea floated a few years ago was to raise this to 15:1) would not necessarily result in a better learning environment or safer situations for patients.

Bon Secours does have an evening program, I am applying for the fall. However, it is not part time. It is full time 3-4 nights per week from 5-9ish, clinicals are every other Sat. I dont know how I will work full time and do this but I am DETERMINED! Atleast I have finished all my Reynolds classes, so all I will have is nursing classes. Makes me feel a little better. Good luck.

Riverside Hospital in Newport News also has a weekend/evening program that is 3 years for an RN. Maybe that would be an option too.

I don't know that that is 100% correct. I'm in the pre-req program at J. Sarg right now, and I've never heard about a weekend program.

I can't believe the RN program is 80k at MCI!!! That is outrages. I am attending there now and
I knew the program had gone up to what I thought was outrages, 40k. But 80k is way to much.
I am paying 27k for the RN program that started last Jan.
I have heard some great things about riversides weekend program. It was were I wanted to
attend but I couldn't make it across the water in time to make classes. I still work fulltime and
have 3 classes to go. I am seriously thinking about reducing my hours before acute care.
Good luck to you! You will find a way to make it work.
No, sorry they dont. I wish they did so I didnt have to transfer to Bon Secours. They dont even offer any night classes.
What school did you take that was online? I havent been able to find online classes for nursing. I would be more then happy to do clinicals day or evening, as I work at two hospitals, Im sure I they would accommadate me as they are both short on nurses and could use the help.
