NNAS experience?

Published

Does anybody have any experience with NNAS? So far, I've read the site but it would be great to hear from people who have gone through the process :)

The Canadian regulatory bodies switched to NCLEX not because it assesses the Canadian entry to practice competencies, but because they wanted to switch from a paper and pencil exam (the CRNE) to a computer based exam. The CDN RBs warned Assessment Strategies Inc (ASI was the CRNE exam developer) years ahead of time that they needed to develop a Canadian computer based exam, but when they solicited request for proposals, ASI did not submit a proposal that could compete with NCSBN's NCLEX proposal. It was a decision that caused acrimonious discussions between the regulatory bodies, professional associations and nursing educators. The educators warned the regulators that the grads would struggle with the NCLEX because it is not based on the entry to practice competencies. The initial low passing rates of the NCLEX exam proved that the educators concerns' were valid. The regulatory bodies response in some provinces was to shrug and say the NCLEX is a nursing exam, not an American or Canadian nursing exam and doesn't need to be anything but a basic nursing exam. While in other provinces the RBs changed their policy for new grads writing the NCLEX from three attempts to unlimited attempts.

Nice background and then finally ASI had computer based testing for CPRNE

Yes, but it is not computer adaptive testing like the NCLEX and still takes weeks for the results.

Yes but regardless, in the end, this is the exam that the Canadian licensing bodies chose. So despite how different groups feel about the exam, it is the exam that has been chosen to deem an applicant prepared in knowledge, judgement and skills for safe entry to practice-- in both Canada and the US.

I've been following this thread for a while and I have previously spoken about my struggles with the NNAS as well as CNO.

I was advised by CARE that I should resubmit all of my nursing syllabi to the CNO and ask them to reevaluate my case.

The director from my nursing school also sent a letter to the CNO on my behalf, assuring them that the program that I got my nursing degree through was an accredited nursing program.

This solicited an email from the CNO and Touchstone saying that I was eligible to take the IENCAPS. I've scheduled my exam for March, however I'd like to go to one of the workshops.

This is especially difficult for me because I am currently working in Texas. (I'm a Canadian citizen, I just happened to do my nursing school in Ohio-passed the NCLEX, but NNAS told me my schooling was "Not Comparable")

CARE were the ones that told me I needed to practice nursing somewhere because my "Safe practice" was going to expire because I have been out of school for 3 years.

I'm interested in finding people who have successfully passed the IENCAPS and to hear about their experience with taking the test as well as the practical portion.

That's the IENCAPS?

Yes...IENCAPS = OSCE exam. .

Currently 14 March and 7 April dates are available. .I have booked for 7th April

I submitted my application to touchstone and my status says "Ready for Exam" My first choice was March 14, do we get a confirmation for which one we got?

I'd like to take the OSCE prep course, but as of right now there are no updated dates on the website.

The only problem with resubmitting all of your syllabi to the CNO is that the CNO will not accept any documentation from any other source aside from NNAS. They will not accept it if you get your school to send it directly to them. You will have to get NNAS to re-send it to the CNO. CNO is re-evaluating NNAS Advisory Reports though, so CARE is right. Although I do believe CNO will be reviewing all cases where NNAS said "non comparable" so you would probably get reviewed anyway but I would check with CNO on that to be sure.

All main thing I have heard about IENCAP is: eat a huge breakfast because they barely feed you enough to keep you upright during the day.

CARE told me to resubmit directly to CNO ... But if everyone is getting reevaluated anyways should I hold off on my IENCAPS?

@tamiko, CNO has directed you to do the IENCAP, do not hold off on doing it.
