Hi there! Just wanted to get in conctact with other applicants who are applying to the Scholar Practioner Program at Nipissing University.
We could use this thread to talk about different components of the application.
Cheers :)
I was looking at the schedule, and I don't know if I'm reading it right, but it looks like we get a month off between semesters.page 10
Do you think this schedule will be updated for 2018-2020 dates?
You should find out which organization you are in soon, or if not you will find out at the beginning of the semester. You won't find out your actual placement until a couple weeks in to the program. And this happens every semester where we usually find out our next placement during the Inquiry period at the beginning of each semester.
Hey guys! I just got an offer of admissions to SPP! I see you guys talking about webadvisor though, and I didn't receive any instructions on setting it up. Can someone fill me in?
Hey! For webadvisor, I got a few letters in the mail when I originally applied to the program saying how to set it up and stuff! I don't have it with me right now but you should have received mail about it a while back. You can access Webadvisor through the Nipissing main page! I hope this helps :)
I'm thinking of a Masters as well, but am unsure about how the SPP program plays into it. I have been accepted to both Nipissing and Queens and they have completely different teaching styles. I don't think I can go wrong with either one though. But I'm not sure what employers think (Im thinking Queens may have more name recognition and would be more familiar to me in terms of teaching style.)Do you guys think employers know about and respect the SPP progroam over Queen's' AST program? How about Masters programs? In a bit of a pickle over which to choose, and if I get accepted to U of T, I still dont know which would be the smart move to choose. In general, does anybody know the pros and cons of each second entry program in terms of employer awareness and easy of furthering education? I thought Id reach out to the community and see what you folks thought.
I have a friend who is a preceptor at Sick Kids, she said they prefer Nipissing students. I have another friend from the first cohort of the SPP who got a job where she did her placement. I think in terms of jobs the SPP is the way to go in my opinion.
Of course in terms of learning style, I think if you learn best outside of typical classroom settings this would likely be a good fit. For myself, I prefer learning in the field and doing my own research so I think SPP is the best fit for my learning style.
Hey @futurenurse612, during the SPP program, do you still get to have rotations in different areas such as maternity, medicine, ortho, neuro, etc? I know traditional programs have clinicals in a variety of areas within a hospital. So I am just wondering if we are placed in Sickkids, are we doing pediatrics for those 2 years? I hope this makes sense!
Thanks to anyone who might have an answer on this:)
@connor67 I actually asked the lady who interviewed me this - unfortunately, the answer is no. She mentioned that because it is a specialized program, there is no "variety" of clinical rotations. If your "home base" is Sick Kids then you are mostly doing pediatrics and you can use the time we can to switch out to Public Health or UHN to see other aspects of nursing. So, I believe you could request Toronto General Hospital for cardio, Princess Margaret for Oncology, etc. However, it is up to us to research and read up on the other areas of nursing that we are interested in.
