Nipissing SPP 2018

Published

Hi there! Just wanted to get in conctact with other applicants who are applying to the Scholar Practioner Program at Nipissing University.

We could use this thread to talk about different components of the application.

Cheers :)

I'm a first year in the program, and there are currently only 42 of us! (2 people dropped out in the fall). Who did you get in touch with, out of curiosity?

Hi everyone! I thought I would peep my head in here and let you guys know that I applied last year to Nipissing's SPP, and I was a part of the 2017 thread. I am currently a first year student in the program, and my home base (the main hospital you will be at), is SickKids. If you guys have any questions for me, feel free to ask and I'll answer them as best as I can!

Congrats to everyone who received an interview! Narrative Inquiry is a MAJOR theme of the program, and these words are used a thousand times a day during the Inquiry period of the program (which is always the first 3 weeks of every semester). Narrative Inquiry is basically how your story, or a patient's story for example, could affect their care when you are creating a care plan for them as a Nurse. Baiba Zarins (the program advisor), wrote an essay about Narrative Inquiry. So if you search that and read it, you will be golden on answering the Narrative Inquiry question! In my interview, they also asked me what my strengths were, if I ever had any previous experience in self-directed learning (such as a thesis in your undergrad), why you chose the hospitals/organizations you put as your first choice, and you will be answering questions based on your prep activity (which are written questions about past experiences you may have had based on a theme). I know they are doing more interviews than just the ones on the 12th, the interviews are all week I believe! I would not stress out too much about the interview, all the professors are friendly, normal people whom we call by their first names. Just be yourselves and try to exude as much confidence as you can.

Anyways, if you guys have any questions feel free to ask away. I look forward to hopefully working with some of you next year!

This was soo generous and kind of you to share!! Thanks so much for the info :) super helpful. Do they also ask site specific questions like about each institution at all? Thanks again!!

No they do not ask specific questions about the institutions (not that I know of anyways). I was only asked why I chose SickKids as my first choice and that was it. With UHN and TPH it would be hard to ask specific questions about because the placements from those organizations are varied.

Thank you sooo much for reaching out! That is extremely helpful! What did you say about Sick Kids being your first choice -- it is also mine :)

I feel that I have a good Narrative Inquiry answer but I would love to share it with you -- could you possibly add me on Facebook? My name is Tamara Amanda on there. Thanks so much again for reaching out!!

Hi Tamara, I would like to stay anonymous on here for now, but feel free to email me at [email protected]

I did not really know what to say in my interview, but I expressed a specific interest in working with kids and I told the professors about my previous experiences with children through work and volunteer jobs.

Thank you so much for sharing this information, it's extremely helpful and helps calm my nerves a bit haha. I am getting extremely nervous for my interview.. only 1 day away!! Do you remember if you used the entire 3 minutes to talk about NI? How important do you think it is to utilize the entire time? Do they time you?

They don't time you, but I think they expect you to fully explain your thought process and how you came to this understanding of Narrative Inquiry. Like I said NI is basically the theme of the entire program, and it helps if you mention your previous degree and how that has influenced your thought process about coming to an understanding of what NI is.

Best of luck to everyone who has their interview tomorrow! I look forward to (hopefully) meeting you guys in September :)

I hope everyone's interviews go well today and throughout the week!

Did they say it was early May? I thought it was April? I forgot to ask but that was what it said on the website.

How was your interview?
