the next flu vaccine scandal

Published

The are reporting on CNBC that a bunch of Wall Street companies got H1N1 vaccine in, enough to vaccinate all their employees. I have yet to see a writen news report on the subject yet so I am not sure it is true and am no sure of the details.

Pretty much these days it is best to be careful about believing what you hear on our media outlets...there is a great deal of fear mongering, fact stretching, and finger pointing taking priority over actual responsible reporting. Your wait and see attitude is wise.

According to the Associated Press, large companies in New York City that have on-site medical staff are allowed to apply for the vaccine. They receive it, however, with the caveat that only high-risk employees are to be vaccinated; e.g., pregnant women. Goldman Sachs and Citibank have received the vaccine, as have Columbia University and the Federal Reserve Bank. A spokeswoman for the city's health department told the AP that only half of the city's pediatricians have applied for it.

The theme of the recent CIDRAP Conference in Minneapolis was "Keeping the World Working" during the pandemic. There were many international as well as North American company reps that spoke. They are indeed, protecting their critical staff with antivirals. Will they do vaccines as well? Probably.

Good Year was present and has many employees overseas. Think of a power company in Canada where if their employees are out sick, it effects many, many other people. It is in everyone's best interest to protect critical infrastructure. The question is, what is defined as critical?

Critical infrastructure is a term used by governments to describe assets that are essential for the functioning of a society and economy. ...

Yep, there's a piece on this "scandal" on NBC Nightly News right now...

ABC news tonight stated that one of the companies donated 100 doses of the vaccine to a children's hospital in new york.

so much for the "scandal"

That is nice they are donating. People in Pittsburgh are really upset about the way the vaccine was allocated. It was in no way connected to need.

I also heard that and read about it. I'll ask my son, the stock broker if it's true, if he knows..... Right now I'd believe any horrible thing about our economic shakers and movers......

My son says there has been no mention at his company of H1N1 flu vaccine hogging on Wall St. They haven't gotten any there, but he and his wife, with their 6 week old baby arrived almost an hour early, 3 weeks ago at a drive-in clinic in Los Angeles advertised as having H1N1 vaccine. The line of cars was miles long on a cross street of the one the clinic was on; and he was able to get onto the street where the clinic was, but a police officer told him to move around the block and get in line on the other street, complaining that the police department hadn't been notified of extra traffic there.

No signs indicated that only high risk people, health care providers, and those caring for infants under 6 mo. old would receive the vaccine. They saw many low risk appearing people in line (of course you never know, I told them.)

Oh, and they had absolutely no side effects of their shots, not even a sore arm. It was a bit hairy when they finally pulled up to get their shots, as there was only one injectable dose of it left, they were told. That would have meant that my son would have to be isolated from their baby, until the period of time was over when the attenuated vaccine in thge flumist would not shed any live virus (whenever that is) but a different nurse found another one for him.

The TV news just showed footage of dogs getting their form of vaccine (I forget if there's a 6 and 2, or where they're placed in the name), which I sure hope wasn't manufactured ahead of that for humans. They said the cost is $18 and dogs have no immunity to the novel flu. I have a beloved 13 year old cocker spaniel, but I sure wouldn't have him vaccinated against the doggy form of swine flu, before an adequate supply of vaccine for humans is available.

Anyone know if the FDA approved the Glaxo-Smith vaccine for use in the USA? No problems for those I know who are getting it in Canada.
