New York New Grad

Hello,

I am so tired of applying! Its nothing but rjection after rejection. I am at a lost on what to do at this point. I am searching for a hospital position.

Specializes in Critical Care; Cardiac; Professional Development.

You will need to search outside of hospitals or consider moving.

eta:  I took a look and it looks like you are already working in a SNF. You are no longer going to be considered a new grad, which makes getting into an acute care (hospital) environment even more difficult for you. Making the leap from SNF to acute care is a notoriously difficult one and in NYC may very well be impossible.

I would suggest you look at rural hospitals desperate for help, then apply to work the worst shift they have - either nights or rotating shifts most likely. Then move to be near your job and stick it out for at least one year, preferably longer. It will be rough and you probably won't love it, but if you want acute care experience on your resume, you are going to have to recognize your odds and do what you have to do to work your way around barriers. You won't qualify for a residency (no longer a new grad, as you have been working under your license) and NYC is notoriously hard to get a job in without experience, even when its not the time of Covid. Get a year or two under your belt in a less desirable place and you can move wherever you want, including back to NYC most likely.

I need advice on getting into a hospital. Even if there is a 1% chance. I appreciate your frankness and I understand where you are coming from. However it isn't easy for me to pick up especially in the moment. Thank you for the advice and have a lovely holiday.

Stony Brook University Hospital is hiring a ton of new grads all over the hospital and float pool because of Covid. They have a great nurse residency. Apply to unit positions and float pools! I was having a hard time getting hired in the NYC and Nassau county area myself and I got a position at Stony Brook. The commute is a little far for me but it’s worth it.

good luck!

God bless you. I just applied to every full time position LOL hopefully something pops up!

Hi. I'm in the same boat as you. Graduated in May 2020, passed NCLEX in July, started applying everywhere in late August and never got a single call or email since then.

I then started applying out-of-state (Washington DC to be exact) beginning of Dec. and soon got an interview/offer for a nurse residency program. It's crazy how quick they were compared to here. I've also inquired about Upstate in Syracuse and they're hiring new grads b/c they're expanding capacity.

There's definitely more opportunities outside the Greater NYC/LI area.

Good Luck to you!

I’m a new graduate nurse from NYC working now at Stony Brook Hospital. SBU has a lot of new grad opportunities. Same also for Upstate New York and DC/Virginia/Maryland hospitals.

If your goal is to work in a major NYC hospital, your best chance might involve having to relocate for a year, get experience and then return back to NYC.

I don't have that high goals ill take any hospital relatively close to NYC. I've applied to Stony brook so we will see. I already have a few interviews lined up so hopw for the best!

Also I'm very happy that you got a position at Stony Brook. I hope its treating you well and nursing is everything you wanted it to be ?

May I ask which facilities you’re interviewing for? I’m in the same boat as you and I can’t seem to find anything.

Congrats on securing some interviews, by the way!

Mount sinai and the VA.

Try clinics associated with hospitals too. It's not acute care but a lot of them pay well enough for me not to mind LOL

Thank you so much for your response! I’m going to submit a few applications to those places. I hope the best for us!

Honestly just apply everywhere and for everything regardless of experience. I know a co worker with the same amount of experience as me get hired at a major hospital, and all their postings ask for 2 years!
