New Telecommute Case Manager

I have been in Case Management in the hospital for 5 years. Just took a job as a Telecommute RNCM. I will be training for 6 months in house. Can anyone tell me a typical day for a RNCM working for insurers. Also, when they say you have to have a dedicated office with a locked door.....How do they check on that?

I never had anyone come to my house to check my home office, but if anyone were to access records or your computer (or steal it), they would be sure to ask why the door wasn't locked. Have a lockable file cabinet you can put the laptop into, and lock it up when you're not there. I did have a laptop/tablet stolen from my house, but I called the employer instantly as soon as I discovered it gone (at 0630), and they were able to disable it remotely so patient info was not compromised. I also made the police report promptly and submitted it to the employer and there were no repercussions.

As to typical day, it varies by employer. They are able to track your computer remote. Some employers will want to see you turn that thing on and start working at 0800 and not turn it off until 1700. Some just want to be able to see that you are getting your calls made and your reports done on time, regardless of when you actually do them. Ask.

GrnTea is correct about remote computer tracking. Just abouteverything is possible with today's electronic technology -------- includinglocating a stolen computer if the thief has not disabled the tracking programor device. As far as the "locked door" is concerned -- the point isthat family/others cannot access PHI/Personal Health Information, or overhear youwhen talking to patients or providers. And the "locked" part showsthat you are properly concerned about their equipment and PHI, and keep theequipment and information in a secured manner -- the same way you would guardanything of your own that you consider to be of value.

I use my home computer, must use a dedicated line. Everything is password protected times a gazillion passwords!

Write those down! I have seen colleagues unable to work because they forgot one. Needless to say, that doesn't go over well.

My company only required a photo of my work area.

You bet your sign off/on time , along with phone availability is closely monitored.

Or as my son, the computer guru says.. every keystroke you make is watched.

You obviously have a strong work ethic, so it will not be a problem.

I am a telecommuting case manager and things will vary based on your company. I never had to prove my office had a door locked. However, HIPPA is very important and I cringe to think about what would happen if anyone were founded in violation.

I will echo the fact that you need a strong work ethic. Everything you do is being tracked, and there is a high level of accountability.

I can tell you this... at Humana if they can come to your house they will, they did to many that worked for them when I was there.. I don't know who you are going to work for but I wouldn't leave my day job for an insurance company position of "tele" work.. but that is me. After doing this for 2 1/2 yrs enough is enough... I would like your inhouse job... I do have my CCM but can't get a foot in the door as I haven't been anywhere in the hospital to work but in the OR... that was only for about 10-15 yrs worth.

I have now completed 3weeks in my new job. I am very excited with my prospects of tele work. I now know I just need a room with a door that closes (does not need to be locked). Great company who are working hard to make sure I succeed in this role. Definitely the BEST move I have ever made!! They do home checks but I believe I will be notified when they come out to check!! This is a TPA and I love their ethics. Best job I have had in a looong time!!!

I am working for HMA a TPA. Yes still in the honeymoon phase but never enjoyed hospital case management this much OR felt so supported!!

What does the HMA stand for? Is this an insurance company
