New Student: Please Help( I would really appreciate it)

Published

Hello everyone,

I will be starting NS on Aug.18, I'm very very excited. My question is are there any books or anything that I could be reading right now, so I will be on my game even on the first week. I want to go in with a new attitude (always be proactive and not reactive). Please help. :saint: Also are there any supplies that I will need in my first semester?

Thanks in advance,

Ready, I remember well the excitement of nursing school approaching!

My suggestion to you is to wait for your instructors to tell you what you need. You'll be laying out a minimum of $500 on books and supplies and don't needs anything extra.

And enjoy this free time. It's the last you'll have until next summer.

:)

While I totally agree with Suesquatch to enjoy the summer, I also can understand the zeal of a new student. I'm getting ready to start my second semester on Aug 19th.

What I would suggest is working on med math calculations. If you look through the threads you'll find some links supplied by Daytonite. By practicing drug calculations before starting, I felt pretty good going in.

Thanks so much.

hi! are you in an adn program or bsn? will you have a drug calc class? i just graduated from an adn program and when we were told in 1st level the 1st day that they don't teach drug calc, go get the workbook in the bookstore and basically figure it out. they did have a tutor available to help if needed once a week. if i would have known that the summer before, i would have started going thru that workbook. i definitely wouldn't stress over it, just get ahead of the game if that's the case in your program. i also always got the list of drug cards from friends ahead of me in the program that would be due the next level and did them during breaks. super easy if that's all you have to do. but add drug cards to a zillion other things during the semester and they are a pain. hope this makes sense! :nurse:

i would definitely recommend mosby's tour guide to nursing school. its a short book on ns, time management, improving study habits, surviving clinical rotations, and balancing school, work, and family obligations.

i would also recommend buying a nclex-rn review book and start studying from day 1!!

lastly, if you don't have one already, i would invest in a medical dictionary. i have taber's and i love it!

If you have no experience in health care, you might consider a medical terminology self-study. One such is: Medical Terminology: A Short Course by Davi-Ellen Chabner. There are others.

There is a study guide with practice questions from ERI, the people who make the NET. I know my school had copies of the book on loan for us to study with before we took the test.

Get your hands on a test taking strategies nursing book.

Fundamental of Success is a good book. I also bought a huge NCLEX prep book. Yes, I dont know most of it, BUT it never hurts to read through it and practice the NCLEX questions. Its a good investment since you'll probably use it when studying for the NCLEX!

If foundations is your first course, look into fluids and electrolytes. Most of the people in my class had a hard time with these devils. Also, I agree about the med math.
