hi everyone! I am new here, just found you guys a few days ago. I am trying to get into the nursing program, but have a ways to go still:nurse: My name is michelle, I'm a stay at home mom of one year old twins( almost 1 ). I am anxious to start on semister 2 here in a couple weeks. Just wandering, who all has taken intro to psych, intro to sociology, eng 112 and math 50 already, and what is the general concensus? I am taking some flex classes so they will be spread out throughout the semister. I take my classes online, any thoughts?
Helo and welcome here at Allnurses.com!
On my opinion:
1 - Intro to psych - is so boring, that if you loose your focus, you will not understand anything! i did not like this class, since all the good stuff starts in psych it self! although some subjects, such as cognition, and other neuro related chapters were interesting!!! (the same goes to sociology)
2 - eng 112 - it is a class that you have to write a whole lot! we had to write 400 words per chapter, and had an extra 500 word APA format essay every 2 chapters, and were graded on a final portifolio which was worth 40% of the class points! we had midterm, and finals, and also a presentation on a (I-search project) with a minimun 5 page and 4 reliable sources 2 being strictly from a print! This class was full of essays, and in the end, who had taken advice, corrected their essays after the teachers review, got a nice grade on portifolios, while others have goten c's d's!
3- math 50 is basic math, it is very easy, pay attention because it is where you will build your base (which will come in handy for drug calculations! and will help you tons in algebra!)
i think that you can do them just fine, like i said pay attention not to loose your interest/focus on sociology, and intro to psych!
do your mat and english homework, and practice those math skills!
Great Luck to you!
I was in the same position as you a while ago, and now will start NS in 6 days!
I had taken English and Sociology online. They were a lot of reading and writing. We were required to not only post our responses/answers to the homework, but also read and respond to 3-5 other classmates postings every week to facilitate discussion. It would be a pain becuase most people would wait until the end of the week to post so it didn't leave a whole lot of time to get your responses in. Extra needless work, but it worked out better for me becuase I was unable to attend classes on campus. I found online classes to be more work. You get out what you put in. My instructors weren't very helpful. You practically teach yourself. If you enjoy the work and have a good foundation in the subjects, then it's doable. Just be prepared for a lot of reading and writing. Lots of papers and essays.
CSantos had a good response about the subjects. I agree with him. Goodluck.
mishy0208 and exsnohs, if you don't mind me asking, how old were your twins when you started school? I know it's kind of OT, but my third baby is due a week or so after classes start, and I have two more at home. And i'm in my first semester of pre-reqs, so I was just wondering how other people did it. Sorry about hijacking the thread.

I started school this fall, and my boys were a year old. Now they're 16 months. It's definitely tough! I do all my studying and homework between classes, and after the boys go to bed. I'm usually up all night, which isn't healthy, but it's my only option. Do you have someone around to help with the kids? I'm a single mom, so I'm all on my own, and can manage..I know you'll do just fine :) Good luck!

Well, I'm not a single mom, I do have a wonderful husband who is willing to help any way he can, I just feel bad asking him to lol. We've only been married about six months, and since i've been pregnant he's taken on so much helping me with the older kids and things like that. I was a single mom before I met him, and I guess that way of thinking hasn't gone away. Anyway, thanks for your reply, I know that I can get through this. I was just wondering how other people managed. Good luck to you!! :)
I too started semester 2 of my pre-reqs, all online as well. I only have experience with Eng 121 of the ones you asked about. We used Frankenstein as a text and wrote a 1st sentence analysis, a close analysis, as well as a literary analysis paper. We also did a position paper, a response paper, a creative non-fiction paper and a final self-evaluation. We also had 12 discussions (one at a time) we had to be involved in. This class showed me the differences in types of projects but my teacher marked our literary papers using 'Writepoint', which I think all it did was check for plagiarism and common writing mistakes. I was hoping for more 'criticism' in my work and real ways to improve, I didn't get anything like that from my prof. but was very happy with my A+ anyway.
hey, my babies were 6 months when I started. I actually was getting bored staying at home all week with them, and found school to be a great way to feel productive:) So far, it is working out quite well. I love the online classes and if you get your new baby(congrats!!) and other 2 on a tight schedule( naps, bedtime) you'll have time for your work:)
good luck!
WOW! I couldn't even imagine going to school with kids that young. Although I work more than full time and go to school, you two have alot more responsibilites than I do at home. I am lucky enough that my husband has been very supportive and keeps the house and stuff running smooth so I can study without having to worry about laundry or cleaning and such. I am starting 2nd semester of pre-reqs as well. I work Mon-Fri (usually pick up every other weekend also) and go to school in the evening. I am taking General Psyhcology and Chemistry this semester as well as a Fitness class.
