after a particularly odorous day, i've decided we should post some new signs that all patients can see as they enter the er:
bathing not optional
oral hygiene required
clean underwear a must (your mother was right)
all dirty unruly children will be dunked in bleach and given to supernanny
combs and brushes are your friends
anyone have others they would like to add???

I have often thought we should have the equivilent of a "Robo car wash" in the ER where we could strip the patient, strap them to a gurney, and have them go thru the puff and buff line. A quick spray down with warm water, then the soft brushes with soap for ALL the body parts, a good rinse down and blow dry, then out the other side with a new gown and smiling nurse standing ready!

Dixielee - how cool is that idea? We actually have the robo-wash - its the decon shower/gurney!

I would like to tell this to our pts coming to my Same Day Surgery Unit. We interview them the day before & tell them not to wear alot of cologne, perfume, or alot of make up. From a cleanliness point of view all pts should be told to take a shower or bath before coming in for their procedure.
For those men who still don't "clean up" before their surgery, I ask that when I tell you to take off your under wear please keep the info to yourself that you don't wear any. That is TMI :roll
TraumaRUs, we have a decon area too, but we just don't use it enough!! I think the process should begin in triage.
I worked at a hospital a few years ago that had a cool policy. When we would take someone up to L&D, the patient was met by a nurse who handed her a gown, towel and soap and told to go straight to the shower from the wheelchair. If she was not crowning, she got a shower! I loved it!

Heck with the soft brushes and ect. Most that need a bath need to clean with steel wool and sandpapper. Then brush their teeth or where there is suppose to be teeth with with degrungant and have their knotty hair that is worse than some dogs shaved.

We actually had to ADD "bath" to pt. teaching for the phone interview the day before surgery, after a pt. came in, who had not bathed in ten years (his words). There's no words to describe the odoriferous funk that floated around the OR.
And he was there for a circumcision. Like i said, he hadn't bathed in years, and lets just say we went through several towels and washclothes before we could even begin with the prep scrubbing. NASTY!!!
rjflyn...I was just trying to be nice, but I think your idea is probably more effective!
Marie, a few years ago we were getting ready to do a pelvic on a woman in the ER who said...exact words, "OHHHH, you aren't gonna like it down there, I ain't got around to washing that thang in a while"......unfortunately, she was right!
Here in WV we say that people have "summer teeth" Some are there & some aren't :chuckle

Please remove body piercings before admission! (nose, labia, nipple rings, prince alberts, tongues...)
Yeah, i always love those gynecology procedures where we find out the pt. has a "down there" piercing when we put their legs up in the stirrups. SURPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!
