new "over 35" thread

Hello, Everyone

My name is Carmen, I am 37 years old and I have a teenage son named Anthony he's 17. I am presently at a community college taking courses towards my Nursing degree . I hope to get accepted into a ADN Pre-Nursing Program. Though I may still continue taking the prerequisites for the BSN. I really would like to get my BSN it seems that this is what employers are requiring more and more in my area. I am also hoping to become recertified as a Nurses Aide before I return to classes in the Fall 2003. Glad to know that there are other members out there who are in my age group.

37 here. I'll be a senior this fall in a BSN program. I'm doing an externship this Summer in the ER and having a ball! Oh, married, 3 sons.

I start the ADN program in the Fall. My grades for the spring semester were:

C in Chemistry,

C Intermediate Algebra,

B- A&P2

B Psychology,

A A&P Lab and

A in Chemistry Lab.

I was NOT allowed to register for the Fall semester because I got a D in Algbra at MIDTERM. I worked my BUTT off trying to bring the grade up. I got a D on the final, but I had signed a contract with my math instrctor stating that IF I spent at least 6 hrs. a week in the math lab, turned in all homework when asked, and got a C on the final we were guaranteed a C in the class. I spent 20 hrs a week in the lab. I really tried!!

On May 08, 2003 I went to the Nursing dept. only to find out that there was a waiting list of about 30 students ALL of whom had a better GPA than I did. She basically told me there was no hope of me getting in this yr. I had finished ALL my req. except Microbiology.

I had to go home and tell my 4 children and my husband that I didn't make it. It was really HARD to tell my 16 y/o girl, 12, 11 and 8 y/o boys that Mommy had failed. My semester GPA was 2.6 my Cummulative GPA was 2.8. They require a GPA of 2.7. [semester]

I have always taught my children that if you try hard enough you can do whatever you try. Now I was living proof that it wasn't true.

I decided to put it in God's hands, becuase sometimes I honestly think that I am possessed by Satan. He does what he can to discourage me and wear me down., trying to convince me that I am a worthless, no good, can't have the golden ring type person. GRRRRR He makes me soooooo mad.

On Tuesday May 12, 2003 I went back to the Nursing office to see about taking a 1 yr. program in Surg. Tech. I figured, I had to keep taking classes so I may as well take classes that would relate to nursing. I checked with the director and she told me I had a spot in the program in the Fall. I cried right in front of her and Thanked God immediately!!

So now I am TERRIFIED!! Is Intermediate algebra really needed? Or is that a 'weed out' class?

I also know that in the ADN program an 80% in a C.

My schedule is Monday I am in clinicals Tuesday and Thursday I am in Lecture and Wednesday I am in Lab. It is an 8 hr. class

I have sooooo many questions and don't even know where to begin.

I am 42 y/o have had some medical training. Advanced first aid 25 yrs ago and a Basic EMT 2 yrs ago. I LOVE medicine but am really afraid of the math!!

Can you all help?

I am so happy for you!! It must have been a huge relief to get in. Are you going to have to take college algebra in your program? I just took it and it was a bit of a bear (especially since I was taking nursing class as well). My math teacher said that a lot of people do better taking it in the summer. It's a faster pace, but you don't have time to forget anything. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend taking it with nursing unless you're comfortable with math, IMHO.

Forty six and still growing here! I start an ADN program in the Fall. A&P II summer class starts tonight! I've been a SAHM for the last 19 years, coupled with part-time medical transcription and English teaching/tutoring.

We've already had orientation for the ADN program, and fully 80% of the students look as if they graduated high school at least 20 years ago!

I wish it was September now, though I plan to enjoy my last more-or-less full time summer at home with my youngest, a 9-year-old daughter.

36 with a 4- and 6-year-old. I have a BS and almost completed an MA. Looking at either an ADN or BSN (leaning toward the ADN). Taking pre-reqs in the fall and hoping to get into the January program. Excellent board!

Hi everyone, it's nice to see this subject up and going again. Since it's been a while, I'll update. Now I'm 41. Finished Algebra with an A, wow that felt good. Finished A & P with a C, barely. Just finished Medical Microbiology with a C, again, barely. I'm all done with all of my pre-req's, but I just don't have enough points to get in for oh......... 3 years or so. So......... I'm going to take Advanced Physio (ICK) so I can get extra points. It seems to me I have to go through most everything the long...slow...far way around....to do many things in my life.

I don't think that satan is attacking you Karen, it just might mean that you have to take longer to get there. God is probably wanting you to learn that plus other stuff. Your lesson to your children is Just as valuable! Just because you fall, doesn't mean you are failing, it just means you are not perfect. Your children will learn grace and forbearance. I have 2 kids too, and it was humiliating to tell them when I was failing exams, even when I studied my guts out. Now they know mom's not perfect, but she NEVER gives up. And they see my faith in God, that He has me right where he wants me. Hang in there, don't be so tough on yourself, you are doing an amazing job! .

I'll probably get into the RN program at the latest in Fall '04, so that means I'll finish June '06! Boy that seems far! So let's see, doing the math, that'll make me..... 44! Well heck, I'm gonna be 44 anyway, why not do some great things?!
