New passing standard for the NCLEX-RN Examination to Start on APRIL 1, 2010

Nursing Students NCLEX

Hello Everyone,

Just to give an update here is the latest news about NCLEX this might affect the passing standard.

This post is just to give an information for those who are planning to take NCLEX in future.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN®) voted on Dec. 10, 2009, to raise the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN® Examination (the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses). The new passing standard is -0.16 logits on the NCLEX-RN logistic scale, 0.05 logits higher than the previous standard of -0.21. The new passing standard will take effect on April 1, 2010, in conjunction with the "2010 NCLEX-RN® Test Plan."

After consideration of all available information, the NCSBN Board of Directors determined that safe and effective entry-level RN practice requires a greater level of knowledge, skills, and abilities than was required in 2007, when NCSBN implemented the current standard. The passing standard was increased in response to changes in U.S. health care delivery and nursing practice that have resulted in the greater acuity of clients seen by entry-level RNs.

The Board of Directors used multiple sources of information to guide its evaluation and discussion regarding the change in passing standard. As part of this process, NCSBN convened an expert panel of nine nurses to perform a criterion-referenced standard setting procedure. The panel's findings supported the creation of a higher passing standard. NCSBN also considered the results of national surveys of nursing professionals including nursing educators, directors of nursing in acute care settings and administrators of long-term care facilities.

Ok so what does that mean? are they just making the test harder or more questions?

The test will be slightly harder

Isn't this what they always do? I was told in an NCLEX seminar I attended that they usually raise the standards every few years.

I was told the same thing by my NCLEX review instructor last 2008 that the 2009 NCLEX would be harder. So, when I failed the 1st time, didn't blamed myself too much. But c'mon, when I took it last November, I was close to peeing my pants since the test was so hard that I have to deep breathe 5x before I answer a question.

Well, to those who would take it next year, take it on March! LOL!

Specializes in being a Credible Source.
This is incredible, i wonder what they are thinking, do they want people to pass nclex or to fail.

They're probably thinking, "Geez, nearly 90% of first-time takers are passing the test... and we're hearing continuing reports about new licensees being knowledge deficient... perhaps we should make our test a bit more rigorous."

I'm sure they want people to pass... but not by having low standards.

By comparison to any other licensing exam of which I'm aware (USMLE, Bar, PE, CPA), the NCLEX is a total joke.

To be honest, most of these "IFFY" nurses have horrible training on the job, or the schools didnt have enough hands on.....

I've met several nurses that made me wonder who took the boards for them. A harrowing thought when considering that it was common practice to pay ringers to take the test back in the days when it was paper and pencil.

the date makes it somewhat funny for me, april 1 is april fool's day and examiners who will take their exam on that date are the first foolish batch who will be victims of the harder-ish exam...XD

back to being serious, so now i have 3 months left before the bigger monster approaches. better go back and study gazillion times harder to pass it after the holidays...XP
