New passing standard for the NCLEX-RN Examination to Start on APRIL 1, 2010

Published

Hello Everyone,

Just to give an update here is the latest news about NCLEX this might affect the passing standard.

This post is just to give an information for those who are planning to take NCLEX in future.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN®) voted on Dec. 10, 2009, to raise the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN® Examination (the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses). The new passing standard is -0.16 logits on the NCLEX-RN logistic scale, 0.05 logits higher than the previous standard of -0.21. The new passing standard will take effect on April 1, 2010, in conjunction with the "2010 NCLEX-RN® Test Plan."

After consideration of all available information, the NCSBN Board of Directors determined that safe and effective entry-level RN practice requires a greater level of knowledge, skills, and abilities than was required in 2007, when NCSBN implemented the current standard. The passing standard was increased in response to changes in U.S. health care delivery and nursing practice that have resulted in the greater acuity of clients seen by entry-level RNs.

The Board of Directors used multiple sources of information to guide its evaluation and discussion regarding the change in passing standard. As part of this process, NCSBN convened an expert panel of nine nurses to perform a criterion-referenced standard setting procedure. The panel's findings supported the creation of a higher passing standard. NCSBN also considered the results of national surveys of nursing professionals including nursing educators, directors of nursing in acute care settings and administrators of long-term care facilities.

Nehal,

The state boards change every 3 years, this happens all the time. It's already past the time frame for this change, you iddn't have a chance to take them before now so you will not notice any difference. Just study as normal, not real differences from any past changes.

Congratulations!!!! I just joined allnurses and was surprised to find so many good threads. Did you study Kaplan? I am doing 100 questions everyday. Should I be doing something additional to Kaplan?

Yes, they do raise the standard every so often!! Go into the test thinking Safety!!! We must be safe in order to practice. Read Psalm 91 before taking your test!!

I was a little concerned about this new version and it was NOT bad at ALL! i failed the old version. It had a lot more priority and management type questions i thought. Good luck to everyone

they increased the passing score in 2007 when i took my nclex. and 2007 was the first year they added the new types of questions like multiple answers, diagrams, listen to the lung sounds etc... imagine how nervous we were.....

We were told in Kaplan that Audio questions would be on the test... listen to this scenario and choose an answer. They told us that until July 1st, any audio questions we have are "test" questions for future NCLEX and do not count. I do not intend to bank on that... but I was curious if anyone had had any audio questions?

I did not have any audio questions onn my test
