Hi
I was just reading in todays Sunday paper that in 2 weeks new OT laws will take affect and could affect nurses. thanks GW. Well when I first read about this a while back when first proposed it mentioned LPN being exempt from the 40 hour law but this article says RN is affected. I did mention that this could really impact the health care industry if nurses not getting OT.
Well I am still a student but wondering just what is up with the new OT laws and how they will affect those of us in the profession.
Has anyone heard much on how these laws will affect nurses and exactly who is considered exempt from OT.
What world do you live in? The new law exempts employers from having to pay overtime to employees in certain "learned professions" such as doctors, lawyers, accountants and--you guessed it--nurses! In the past, exempt employees were typically salaried, but now wage earners are learned professionals, too. This will stimulate the economy, since employers will no longer have to decide whether to pay overtime or hire more employees (means paying more benefits, if they pay benefits). Now they can keep the same number of employees and just work them more hours. More profits=richer rich people, and soon all that wealth will just naturally trickle down to the rest of us. Good times are just around the corner!
Ok so let me get this right a RN will not get paid OT, but a LPNS will be, is that what u guys are saying basically. i understand that a RN's is considered professional and LPN is not, but hello i rather not be consider a professional and keep my OT, JMO,
I think it sucks that one word determines OT, i think u should be able to be a professional and get OT!!
Everybody wants to bash the Republicans. Have you ever wondered why the Democrats rarely get a man in the "Big House"? I cannot for the life of me understand why you want a Liberal Democrat in charge with our already gimme, gimme society. All this crap about OT, I don't want some burned out nurse on doing alot of OT taking care me and missing things. Fact of the matter is, hire enough staff to do the job right in the first place. That my friends is not a political issue. It is the cheap healthcare providers. Just another thought; I don't see the all powerful nursing groups / organizations like ANA, NLN or NYSNA doing anything to support us. Just keep doing all that OT, it will catch up to you. I have seen the mistakes made and people hurt. Think about it.
Where do you plan on finding these 'nurses' to hire? I don't see em falling from the sky.
I believe, everyone, no matter what your job/profession is, should be paid for OT. The government wants to make it okay for my employer to take me away from my family, and pay no OT ? Who the h*ll do they think they are? These politicians make louds of $$$ and don't depend on OT, but some people do...It's sickening...it won't create jobs...just make Corporate America even richer...
BITE ME, BUSH!!!!!!!!!

I guess you are unaware of something called Mandatory Overtime. Where I live, Hawaii, your supervisor can tap you on the shoulder and keep you another shift, mandatory, no choice, never mind you might have a life and responsibilities, mandatory. And now, there is a move to give them permission to work you that mandatory overtime for straight time pay? Great! The union went out on strike here for seven weeks to fight mandatory overtime and lost. That is the power of the establishment. And it doesn't matter what kind of nurse you want or don't want taking care of you, you get the nurse the hospital management makes do overtime. Get real!
Why are so many Democrats so hateful? I have nothing against the Democrat party, but why all the hate and name calling? Why can't you be respectful of everyone regardless of their party? Why is it that people like Julia Roberts come out and say she looked up the word Republican and found it between reptile and repulsive? What gives? I thought Democrats were the party of love, peace and tollerance.

I think it has to do with the liberal media. Too many people form their opinions based on the word of Tom Brokow and the like.

OMG! That's horrible. What union represents nurses in Hawaii? I was just reading over some of the contracts that CNA has in California, and all them prohibit mandatory overtime. I'm so sorry the Hawaii union lost on that one.
What happened? Did the nurses not have other places to work, or something like that? Here, if the nurses go out on strike, they can find work at many other places.

Can anyone post in the thread the definitions involved? That'd be most helpful to the discussion.
(Went to the ANA cite and it required registration, password, etc., and just didn't have the time to go through all that right now.)
Thanks!
