New OB Nurses, Grads and Students, Please Feel Free to post your questions here:

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Mugwump had a great idea offering services to new grads as a mentor (thank you for that!)

So, I thought having a "sticky" for new grads, OB nurses, students, and others with questions who want to post these can do so here. We also seem to see many of the same questions over and over, so perhaps this would help serve as an ongoing discussion of common issues/questions we all seem to have on our minds. This could serve not just for those asking directly, but others who may be "lurking" and looking for information or considering a career in OB, newborn, GYN nursing, or midwifery, doula services, childbirth education, lactation consulting, or other related work.

So if any mod thinks this is a good idea, mind stickying this?

Let's give this a go and see how it works out. We have many potential "mentors" here among us who, I am sure, would LOVE to help a new nurse/midwife/doula or student on his or her way to a rewarding career. I know I would love to help out!

Okay so heres my question. What are other hospitals doing as far as examining preterm patients? I recently had a pt that was 30 weeks, came in complaining of possible rupture of membranes. Nitrazine and ferning were both positive. I examined the pt, and found her to be 5/80/-1. Im asking because there was quite a big stink made, because i examined the pt. Can some one give me some insight as to how other hospitals are handling this situation?

Specializes in Rehabilitation and long term care.

We must respect the patients cultural beliefs. They should become part of their plan of care. It is not only part of the state nursing guidelines but also an ethical and moral decision. Just as in those patients who will not accept blood to save their life, this is part of their rights and we must not get in the way of those rights.

Not sure how much help this is, but I would have just either asked the physician if I should do do an exam, or if he/she was present wait for them to perform. You said ferning was positive, do yall check for ferning yourselves, cause in my hospital, the MD's check for ferning, we only nitrizine.

Specializes in Emergency Department.

I have been searching for a job in L&D for a few months (new grad). I found a nursing fellowship at my local hospital in Maternal/Child. I applied online on Thursday and called the recruiter on Friday. Now what should I do?? I want this job so badly.....Should I go to her office on Monday to inquire if she received my application and resume? What should I say to her?? I don't want to turn her off because I am being a pest....I want her to remember me! HELP!!

Hi Jamie:

Right, you want her to remember you- but not as a pest. I really don't know if I would go by the recruiter's office (?) If she is having a bad/busy day, it could backfire.

Perhaps some of our members who have been in hiring positions could give you better advice.

When I saw a job I really wanted, I would hand-deliver my resume and ask if the person hiring was busy. Sometimes I got to introduce myself (as I handed my resume) to the person doing the hiring, and sometimes not.

Wish I had some better advice. Good luck!!

Diana

Hello,

I have an L&D interview on Wednesday, 08/12/09. I ABSOLUTELY love this field. Of course i am nervous about the interview and hope that my passion and prayers cover the interview and I get it!! This sticky has been a great wealth of knowledge. I have read from the time it started in 2005 until the last post. ALLNURSES, you are the best. Like a personal mentor.:yeah:

Specializes in Nephrology, Peds, NICU, PICU, adult ICU.

OK I am not a new grad. I have 2+ years of experience as a dialysis nurse working in both Acute and chronic settings. But my passion is L&D. While in nursing school I did my typical "care of the child bearing family" rotation as well as another rotation in L&D. I finally found an L&D job posting that did not "require" past L&D experience and I of course applied. So now I have a few questions. 1. How long should I wait to call and inquire about my application? 2. Should I take the on-line FHM course before interview to show initiative? 3. Would using a nursing instructor as a reference be strange or frowned upon since I've been out of school for a little while? (I've only had a job with one company with the same management since graduation). Any other pointers?

Any ideas suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck Halo 425 I wish the best for you and I hope you get in to Labor and Delivery, I LOVE what I do

Thanks Mugwump I'm going to call today and follow up on my application. I sent it in on-line on Wednesday. Long enough not to be a complete P.I.T.A. but still soon enough to prove I'm serious...I hope!

OK So I called and the person in charge of Hiring at the hospital is out until Thursday. Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated. This is pretty much a dream job!

Specializes in Obstetrics, M/S, Family medicine.

Do any of your hospitals have a battery of questions used on every postpartum patient to determine risk of developing a postpartum mood disorder?

If so, what are the questions and what is looked at?

thank you.

Thanks! It went well I think, but I am up against 17 other applicants for 6 positions. Very laid back. They were VERY nice and excited that I was interested. I expressed my enthusiasm and passion for being a part of the miracle of birth. I hit on a couple of things I knew and researched about the hospital that were community based. I told them i was flexible and wanted to rest my head at their company and grow. I wanted to learn everything they were willing to teach or i can learn on my own and safe patient care is priority to everything. I received a tour. Met a new grad there in L&D. I feel good about it. Have to wait until next week to hear. I will continue to pray for the Lord to open doors.
