New to nursing and college itself. I have a question about pre reqs.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone -

I am 22 years old and got my GED last summer. I am supposed to start school this fall for Nursing. I have to take my assessment test on July 8th. (If it matters, it is at Corning Community College in New York.)

I know absolutely nothing about this. If I don't pass the assessment, is that how I will know if I need pre-reqs, or are they required for everyone? If I need them, how long will they take before I can actually begin my nursing classes? I am going for ADN (RN).

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies. I know this is probably a really stupid question.

Read the school's RN admission requirements. The college catalog tell you classes are used as admission requirements. Generally you have to take specific classes incl. A&P I and II and maybe microbiology and the schools can all vary a bit, so go read. And you take a preadmission test, too. Which one depends the school. Again, that will be spelled out in Admissions Requirements.

Mostly, it takes 1 year or more to get the prereqs done, then 24 mos. for Associate degree. So, 3 years, which is what the old diploma school RN programs were (3 years.)

That assessment test might be something all students must take, a placement test to see what level of math, science, English, etc. you are at. RN programs have their own preadmission test (HESI, TEAS, NLN PAX, & maybe there are others.)

I am pretty sure the assessment test is just for your General Education classes (math, English, etc.) then there will be other pre-req classes such as A&P I and II, Psychology, and so on. I am unsure of the exact classes since I am in KY but maybe if you talked to an advisor at your school they could help answer your question completely. I know when I began school it has taken me 2 semesters to complete the pre-reqs and I have co-req classes that I will be taking in addition to my Nursing classes starting in Fall the be able to complete my ADN. Good Luck on your Nursing journey!!

The assessment you may be referring to is to see whether or not you need remedial classes like for math or English. EVERYONE is required to take pre-reqs for any ADN or BSN program. Your community college should have a detailed list of everything you need to be able to apply for nursing school. Some even require an entrance exam. Again, all of this information is on your schools website. Try looking at the school catalog or program requirements to find what your school requires.

Remedial classes wasn't the correct term I meant developmental classes.

Thank you! This is the answer I was looking for.

Thank you. This is what I was confused about.

What are co-reqs?

And thank you!! :)

I studied for the admission assessment and did well, so was able to skip pre-req's (developmental math, english). I did take one semester of co-reqs (a&p, chemistry, psychology), so that I would have a gpa. I got a 4.0 in that semester, and was admitted to the program to start that year. That was not the norm at my college, and it only took me 27 months all together from start to finish to end up with the ADN, but I was able to get my degree so fast by doing well on the admission assessment. I studied for two weeks prior, which saved me several semesters in school. They have practice admission tests online to practice with. I suggest to do that.

Co-reqs are classes that can be taken along with your nursing classes but aren't actually part of the Nursing curriculum. For instance I got accepted into the nursing program for Fall 2013 because my pre-reqs were done but I have to take A&P II and Developmental Psy on top of my NSG 101 class for the program. Soe people choose to take these classes before ever applying to the program or if for some reason you are denied acceptance to the program you can take these classes while waiting for acceptance.

Co-reqs are basically just like pre-reqs except you can actually be in the program and take these classes simultaneously with the Nursing core classes. They all have to be done either way

Corning cc is part of the SUNY system so their assessment test is to basically see what classes you will be placed in. For example it will tell them if you go into their 100 level math or if you need a remedial math class first, for science would be do you go into biology or do you need a remedial science first.

I believe if you're looking to go into their nursing program you need to take an English, a basic psych, basic math and then your pre-reqs before they accept you into their actual nursing program. If I had to put a time on it I would say you're looking at 1-2 semesters of remedial/100 level classes, then 1-2 semesters of pre-reqs and the their nursing program.
