NEW NMC guidelines- Test of Competence

Published

Hi!

I am new to this site and I heard that this website is really a big help for nurses all over the world.

I would like to ask something from you guys. I recently passed the IELTS Academic here in the Philippines and I am dreaming to work in the UK. I have registered with the NMC and passed the online eligibility assessment for me to sit the test of competence with Pearson Vue. However, as this NMC protocol is new, I am not able to find any resource materials on what questions will be asked in the said test. The only thing that NMC provided was a list of websites to visit that are possible exam topics.

Now since as everyone here is aware that being a nurse is very tedious, I believe I cannot condense all the information from the different websites provided by the NMC. Is there anyone here who have sat the NMC Test of Competence? If so, can you please help me with what resources to read and what possible questions can come out during the exam?

I am planning to take the exam here in the Philippines by next month. Please help me guys!

There is also a question that has no correct answer... unless their "AND" was meant to be "OR"

did you pass or anybody here passed?

hi! has anyone already passed the cbt?

hi ari11990! have you already taken the exam? how was it? im hearing a lot of negative feedbacks from the cbt =(

hi alfredpower! did you already resit for the 2nd attempt? how's your preparation so far?

Specializes in Surg- PACU/Anaes.

thanks gen88! =)

I've heard that a lot of people have failed, and only a few have been reassessed and passed because there could've been more than one correct answer depending on how certain questions were interpreted. From what I've seen on the NMC's blueprint, a lot of the essential questions are related to their laws and their "code," so I'm trying to become more familiar with everything the blueprint says is "essential" information. I sit the exam in less than 2 weeks...[/quote

hi there!

Thabks for you answer I'm getting a little nervous!! I don't know where you are from but it seems a little similar to our registration exam in canada many of the questions have more than one correct answer. So hopefully that will help but it has been a little while since I wrote mine here! GOODLUCK with your exam! Let us know how it went :)

Well, I took the exam for the first time last week and failed... It seems the essential questions are no longer being identified, or at least they weren't on my exam. I had heard a rumor that the NMC had gotten rid of the essential questions, but I called them directly, and they said that the essential questions are still on the exam. Since none of them were identified on my exam, this means they are just hidden and blended in with the rest. They mostly have to do with the Code, so know it well. I thought the test was easy, and it took me about an hour to complete in a non-rushed pace, so I was surprised that I failed. The NMC, of course, will release no information as to how close I came to passing or what information I should study more of. They say it's to "preserve the integrity of their exam," but they've apparently never had an exam before, and they've published an entire blueprint on the exam, so what are they afraid of? We know not to post any questions that were on the exam, etc. Anyway, this is what I've learned so far. I'm getting off my soap box. I resit the exam in two months, so hopefully it goes better. Good luck!

On a side note, I have heard that more people are starting to pass the exam, so it is possible! ;)

Hi everyone!

I am a living testimony that yes, the CBT can be passed. Took the exam yesterday and right after finishing the exam, I checked online and voila! I passed. :)

Now a lot of the comments here actually mention that the exam is easy. IT IS. But the critical questions, all 40 (or 50) of them are not specified so while I was taking the exam and encounter each question, I asked myself, does this question have something to do with public safety? Because really, the critical questions are questions that concern public safety.

Now, how was it in terms of content? I can confidently say that if you have extensive hospital experience, you can pass the exam as well....with the help of some reading of course about nursing in the UK context. I am from the Philippines and really, after reading the publications posted on the NMC website, I can say that nursing here and there is really different.

Surely you want tips, eh? ;-)

Here's some I think you might find helpful. I took the ADULT CBT by the way. :)

1. Don't memorize all the information in all those NMC publications. Just read and understand how it works. That should suffice. I read about the Code, Standards of Proficiency for Nurses, Standard of Proficiency for Pre-registration nursing, Medicines Management, Guidance for the Care of Older People, Confidentiality

2. CBT Blueprint? I did not read it....fully. Just took a glimpse of it a couple of time and by the time I realized that most of the links are outdated, I decided to ditch it altogether and just focus on the publications in item 1.

3. Don't memorize drugs. Just make sure you know how to do basic drug calculations. Your years of experience in nursing should make that part a walk in the park. I think there were 2 or 3 questions on that.

4. If you have read about standards of proficiency for nurses, you should know that adult nurses MUST also be knowledgeable about the other fields of nursing in the UK - yep, children nursing, learning disabilities nursing, and mental health nursing. Questions that relate to these other fields popped out at the last part of the exam (from items 100 - 120 as far as I can remember).

5. Read up on mobility assistance equipment for adults. ;-)

6. Infections. How to deal with them. You should know. :)

7. Death and dying

8. You should know how to dress a wound and the principles behind it. :)

I'll post more tips if i remember more of them. I'm sorry I can't post very specific details as that would be downright spoon feeding. I want to help but it would be unfair for those who have already taken the exam and failed.

Lastly, I want to stress the fact that the exam is EASY. Don't stress yourself too much. Enjoy your time reading about the important stuff. Your nursing experience in the hospital should already help you with almost everything in the exam. And don't forget to pray. That's important as well.

To God be all the glory. Good luck everyone! :)

Hi, i just wanna ask how much the registration and exam cost? and where specifically did you took the cbt/exam?

@ktestella: congratulations for passing the CBT! I have to take the exam too and I'm overloaded with pressures regarding the exam because I have no idea about it though I've been reading through lots of testimonies/articles/documetns but I can't find the exact answers that I'm looking for. If there's any chance that you have available time, kindly email me: [email protected]. Thank you very much! Hoping to read your email one of these days. God bless! To God be the glory!
