I'm a 46 yr old single dad of 3 daugters (that accounts for some of what's wrong with my brain).
I've decided to take the plunge and start the prereqs at my local community college with the intent to become an RN...hence, my presence on this board.
In the last couple of weeks, since I've been here, I've read alot of threads about men in nursing and some of the stereotypes (real or imagined) that go along with the term "male nurse". I, myself, will admit to feeling a bit of a feminine connotation associated with the term, probably due to the association with "nurse" and breastfeeding.
It occurs to me that if we put our heads together, we should be able to come up with a better term that we could then quietly promote in our day to day activities.
We've already heard "murse", RN with prostate and some others but I'd like to hear other ideas too. I'll profer a couple of suggestions of my own to get things started:
Specializes in ltc , rehab ortho geripsych,mds ,subacut.
I personally never had a problem working with a nurse of male gender whats the big deal anyway a nurse is a nurse no matter what gender you are as far as Im concerned

Slightly off topic but still related, Why is it that in every interview I have the nurse manager will at some point say "It is great you became a nurse, we need more male nurses" I never get the job(new grad with ADN and only have BLS, ACLS certifications) and I am starting to get just a little paranoid that this phrase is the kiss of death. I am thinking that in my next interview when they use that phrase I am going to ask "Do you want me to start tomorrow than or wait until the beginning of next week?" and see what they say next.
As much as this thread is made in good humor, there are people out there (yours truly EXCLUDED) who are dead serious about getting a different name for nurses who are men. Why the obsession? Personally, quite happy with plain old NURSE!
Never had a problem until just the other night. A patient of mine, in a post op state of fuzz and confusion, said to me "Oh great, another male nurse, just what the hell do I call you". I told him" try Charlie, Ive been answering to that all my life!" Heck of a world aint it.
