Hello there ,

I have recently started a new job . I am on 3rd week my orientation . My orientation is around 10 weeks.Due to some family reason, I must have to go my country at least for 3- 4 weeks . But I haven't talk to my manager yet because I am scared that it will be very inappropriate and have a fear of being fired from job. I am planning to talk to her after my orientation is over . Do you think its appropriate to discuss about the leave for 4 weeks after orientation.

Please share your ideas. I must go to my country within next 2 months and in a same time I don't want to lose my job .

Thank you all or your help.

one of my grandparents had been hospitalized number of times in past 45 days ..He is a patient with terminal illness :((((:(

I am so sorry...my prayers for you and your family.

This is a tough one. You will not have worked a full year to have accrued (earned) enough hours to make you eligible for and approved leave as required by law. Grandparents are usually not included unless they were your guardian/parent. Three to four weeks is a long time for any employer to grant any employee who isn't eligible for the FLMA/leave act. Even then it only protects your "slotted hours" position and it does not necessarily have to be the one you are leaving.

You can only ask your employer ASAP and see what they say and be prepared if they say no you are going to have a hard decision to make. Would your family member want you to lose your job? There is no nursing shortage and the job market is tight.

I wish you the best.

The only way to guarantee a position with the facility would be to obtain FMLA. This varies depending on the facility, are you trying to stay in this country----which would depend on your employment status?? This is a very tough decision. I hope you are able to see the loved one you need to see and the facility will be able to acommodate your needs.

FMLA does NOT vary "with the facility." It is a federal law. The basic requirement that applies here is length of service.

Firstinfamily: Given your advanced degree, you should definitely be more acquainted with these issues.

It also depends on total hours of work in a year. As a part timer, I have never qualified for FMLA in my 7 years at my current hospital. I have been able to take "personal leave time" though, but it was completely at my manager's discretion.
