UMDNJ Accelerated BSN Program

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Hi everyone! Is there anyone who can provide information on the accelerated BSN program at UMDNJ? I would like to know how durable is the program- the good, the bad and the ugly. What GPA is required for admission and how soon does one have to apply? Thanks- any info would be appreciated:chuckle

YIKES....STAY AWAY from the Seton Hall Accel Program for several reasons! First, the COST, double the NJ-State supported UMD annual cost. NEVER worth the kind of money that Seton Hall (or another northern NJ private college, Fairly Ridiculous a/k/a Fairleigh Dickinson) charges! $60k a year, vs. $30k a year...for same degree, you do the math. Oh, second reason to STAY AWAY from Seton Hall....its Accelerated Program is a Master's Level program....you graduate with a MSN as a "Clinical Nurse Leader". A LAUGH, and a HALF----to everyone except the Ivory Tower Academic Types (Deans, etc) and instructors teaching it. Now JUST THINK ABOUT IT....WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would hire a NEW RN, right out of school, with NO WORK EXPERIENCE and a Master's Degree to work on a hospital floor? No one would!!!! IS THE ANSWER!! Hospital hiring folks realize: "he/she won't stay". It's so IMPRACTICAL, it's almost laughable. Regular ol' ADNs and BSNs are having trouble in this job market....so WHY would a hospital hire a MSN "Clinical Nurse Leader", with NO REAL EXPERIENCE? PLEASE don't waste your money----talk to RNs in the field, and most will tell you the same thing.

I don't know how many of you are still subscribers of this thread, but I just got my acceptance for UMDNJ for the Spring 2011. I know the program is intense, but not so intense that you can't make it to graduate? I know this thread is about 5 years old and don't know how much the curriculum has changed since then, but how's your experience.

You can get into Chamberlain College of Nursing as long as you have a 3.0, no pre-req's, a little pricey but only 3 semesters. Going for 2 years will cost you the same amount in the long run.

Congratulations on acceptance- I am in the new level 1 Fall 2010- plenty of work to do and depending upon your life outside of school in terms of support, it is very do-able- but expect to do school work on a daily basis- 7 days a week- formal lecture classes are on Tuesday and Wednesday, labs on Thursday and Friday with practice skill labs through out the week- lots of reading, some writing, group projects in every class- you will be forced to get to know the people in your class! I enjoy the challenge and the pace, the instructors and my classmates- so far, I am impressed

Thanks Hooter for sharing. I originally applied for the Fall 2010, but apparently applied to late.

I am use to working in group projects from my first degree, and use to work in project management (which deals with working in teams) after graduation. As long as everyone pulls their weight, I have no problem. Should I brush up on any of my prerequisite class books (A&P, etc)?

I'm excited and a bit nervous as I won't have a life starting January.

brush-up on A&P 1&2, dimensional analysis or conversions and get a head start on medical terminology- that will help lighten the load prior to school starting

hi, I also just received my acceptance for UMDNJ (Newark campus) for the Spring 2011. Ya, it sounds to be quite intense program, but I am sure we can make it. Which campus are you going to?

Thanks.

Yes I'm at the Newark campus. I'll PM you so we can exchange info (if you want). Since we are going to know each other for at least 15 months in the program. Previous poster said we will be doing a lot of group projects. I'm not at a computer at this time so it will be later.

hey, I got your message. I just started using this site and still learning where is what. Anyways, we can keep in touch through here, and when it is possible to PM (like u said), we can exchange info.

BTW, I am actually trying to go to O.T School, and have started to apply. But, it is so competitive these days that it is just too hard to get in. I had applied last year too and didn't get in. but who knows about this year. So, I kept nursing as my option. Let's see what happens.

Thanks.

Ok. I didn't realize it was competitive with OT. Since your desire is OT over nursing, I hope you get into that school. When will you hear back from that school?

Actually I am applying to quite a few schools, and the deadlines r all spread out. Hopefully I will at least hear from couple of em by the end of December.

I submitted my application yesterday and haven't had any letters of recommendations sent yet. I hope that i didn't apply too late.
