New graduate RN opps Texas

Curious about new grad nurse opps in Texas, what parts of Texas are best opps to find job, if anyone knows of new grad training programs for OR. What are salaries like in TX. May be relocating there in May after graduating. Any other information related to Texas and nursing appreciated. If you dont mind including specific areas of Texas again I would greatly appreciate it!! thanks!!

BUMPING! I would like to know too. I am starting an ADN program (already have a Bachelor's in another field) and I want to move to the Houston area sometime in late 2011 or early 2012.

I'm a new grad in San Antonio, TX. I graduated Dec. 11th, took my NCLEX Jan. 7th, and was hired on Jan 11th.

The job I got doesn't have an orientation until Feb 14th, so I won't actually 'start' until then, but my job is secured.

A large reason I got the job right off the bat is because I did 2 years of nursing school clinicals in the facility and they knew me, and my work, well. I honestly believe this played a huge part in my being hired. There were many other nurses applying for the spot I wanted (experienced nurses) but I got it. Why? Because they knew me, and honestly, because the don't have to pay me as much as someone with years of experience.

Most of the people I graduated with (all of those who have passed NCLEX, we have a few stragglers that haven't taken it yet) have already secured their jobs. So, I'm thinking San Antonio is a good place! It may be in part due to our clinicals being in the facilities we chose to work, but it's also just a good market right now!

There are still plenty of opportunities for new grads in Texas - but not so much in the major cities. I would advise looking at the medium sized cities or even semi-rural areas. Just keep in mind - if any area/facility that has a "too good to be true" offer - there is a REASON for this. LOL.

Most of the new grad opportunities in hospitals are only through internships, at least in the major metroplex areas. Those post twice a year and begin in June and January respectively, which is about a month after each class graduates. Most of them are not very willing, from what I am hearing, to consider out of state grads, as there are plenty who live locally vying for the position as it is. The economy here is suffering like most places, and though there are still some internships and hiring going on, it is extremely competitive and more about who you know than anything else.

Best of luck to you. I would try rural areas or areas along the Texas/Mexico border.

this is the truth....i have seen ridiculous bones offers $50k +.....there is a reason these areas are offering these type bonuses.....i would run

Wondering if you ever found a job in Texas? If so was it hard. I graduated in IL but am considering moving down there. I have seen a lot of new grad positions many more than here in chicago. Do out of state new grads have a chance?

I have seen a couple of sign on bonuses for new grads one was for $24k! The hospital is 1.5hr away from San Antonio! Why do they offer so much of a sign on bonus? Why is it so scary? The hospital is supposed to be a Level 1 trauma hospital.

I would not move ANYWHERE in this economy without a signed offer of employment with salary info and a firm start date. Do not move before you have a job lined up. It remains very difficult for new grads to find positions in Texas at this time.

As far as sign on bonuses, it is usually because the hospital has staffing issues due to a variety of reasons, from poor location to poor working conditions. Do your homework.
