New Grad, Should I Take the Job?

My advice: take it. Have you read all the posts here about new grads who can't find a job a year after graduation? If you absolutely hate it, you're at least gaining valuable experience you can use to move to another position later.

Take the job. It's so amazing that you found a F/T acute care job. Not even a third of my graduating class (from June '11) has found jobs yet. Worst case scenario= you hate it, stick it out until you can transfer or it looks decent enough on your resume' to quit and find another job (year max) and transfer to a floor you like better.

Seriously, TAKE it. And congrats!!!

TAKE IT. You really don't know what you like until you are on the floor. Plus the experience will be a blessing for when you have the chance to go do what you want. I promise some aspects of it will be useful in wherever you go. It's just a stepping stone...remember that.

You have two alternatives:

A. Take the job, slog through the 2 years while not entirely happy, but have 2 years' acute-care experience when you are done as well as being in a hospital's system, both of which will make it easier for you to move into a specialty you like.

B. Pass on the job: you said you wouldn't be happy there so you could opt out of the misery and not join the sisterhood of new grads who hate their jobs. However you take a big gamble on when--even if--another acute-care job will come along.

Personally, given the job market, unless I had another fairly certain offer in the immediate future (read: coming in the next day or two), I'd take the neuro job and make it work. But I'm not you--you need to decide what will be best for you. Good luck whatever you decide!

My God, I hope you will take the advice given here. TAKE THE JOB!!!. If you accept it and just can not deal with your dislikes of the job, you can resign, possibly transfer, whatever, but you can not however get that job offer back once you decline. If you need some inspiration, seriously, just google new grad nurse forums or blogs. Read a couple pages of these blogs. I was literally left in tears after reading some of the posts I read today about new graduates who have been unable to find jobs for 6 months, a year, and yes, even longer than that in other cases. I hope to God you take the job unless you have another offer on the table RIGHT NOW...TAKE THE JOB! Keep us posted. :)

Take the job! There's nothing like that orientation in a big hospital and you will gain so much experience no matter what floor or specialty you start in.

When I ask nurses with 10 or more years experience about their first job it is often very different from what they are doing now. Gotta start somewhere!

Looks like the votes are unanimous! Haha. I accepted the job this morning! I really couldn't take the chance of passing this opportunity up.

Funny story though, another hospital called for an interview right in the middle of me accepting the offer. Hope that wasn't a sign! lol

This is my first time using allnurses, wish I would've started sooner. Thank you everyone for all your replies and support!!! You guys rock! :)

I wouldn't worry about the other hospital calling during the acceptance of your job. Frankly, I've had interviews in the last few months but no job, this could've been one of those deals, in which case you saved yourself the buttpain of a "no thanks" interview:yeah:
