I graduate in August and am looking to move to TX to be with my best friend and depending on what med school she gets into we will be moving to Houston or Dallas. Are there any new grad programs in these cities or any hospitals that hire new grad nurses? I contacted Texas Children's in Houston today and the HR rep was pretty mean to me and said they only hired for January for new grads (which sounds incredibly stupid to me). Are there any others?

tch is INCREDIBLY hard to get into.
med center internships are at - methodist, tch, memorial hermann, park plaza, st. joseph (downtown, near med center), woman's hospital of texas, st. luke's.. i'm sure i'm missing something. they also have new grad programs at the community branches of these hospitals if they have them (hermann, methodist, st. luke's).
Do those programs start any time? I graduate in August so they'd have to start in September or something around then.

Most of the new grad intern programs start in June and January in Houston. Dallas may be different. They like to do new grad hires in groups because many hospitals have a structured training programs and it is most cost effective to train new grads in one group instead of many small groups throughout the year.
Some do start for the August grads; I know St. Lukes does.

Memorial Hermann is not hiring new grads this december. I am graduating, had an interview set up, and was called an hour before saying they are cancelling all new grad interviews. I know this is true, because all my classmates interviews were also cancelled. They are behind budget due to Hurricane Ike. Also, UTMB is laying off a ton of people, and the local area hospitals are working on getting those nurses in positions. Maybe things will be better a few months from now, though.

It's not stupid because many new nurses graduate in December. Not everyone graduates in May/June.
St. Joseph in downtown Houston is hiring new grads and offering internships in specialty areas. I know this because I have a friend who got strung along at Memorial Hermann looking for an OR internship. The comments made about MH by another poster above has explained a lot about why this happened to him.
I pick up shifts there occasionally and trust me, they approach me to go full time in any area I choose all the time. I told them about my friend wanting to be an OR nurse and they were right on it wanting to interview him, and trust me, OR is a very hard specialty to break into and get an employer willing to train you for.
As far as Dallas goes, Big Baylor and Presby Dallas were posting new grad internships as of a week ago that I know of, check their websites.
I don't know personally about Parkland, but check them out too as they are a big level one trauma center and frequently what goes along with that status is a willingness to train new nurses.
UT Southwestern still has new grad positions posted but mostly for med/surg and telemetry.
Many new grad internships have already been snatched up by the December graduates in Dallas and Houston.
Like I stated in my earlier post, that explains a lot for my friend who got strung along by MH when there was never going to be an OR internship for January 09 to begin with.
Yes UTMB is laying off a ton of people.
However, Houston is the 4th largest city in the nation and consequently, has lot of nursing jobs. The newly jobless UTMB nurses are not going to fill these needs alone. There are still plenty of nursing jobs in Houston.
Many UTMB nurses are trying to get into MD Anderson because they are a part of the UT system and can transfer their longevity, sick time, and most importantly, their retirement in the TRS system.

I know that Methodist and St. Luke's hire for August grads and they are both great hospitals to work for. However, St. Luke's will only consider your application IF you are an August grad. If you are a May grad they won't consider you for the August internship. Apply early- both hospitals are competitive!
Good luck!
Wow, I didn't know that for MHHS. Is it company wide?
UTMB transplants are everywhere right now. I just hired on somewhere new and most of the new hires with me were UTMB folks.
