I'm looking into the Dallas/Ft Worth area. What can a new nurse expect to make? Are their unions? What are some good hospitals to look into and how are nurse/pt ratios?

The new RN pay is not extremely high in the DFW metro area.
Expect to be offered between $22 and $23 hourly at the local acute care hospitals as a new grad with no experience. The skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation hospitals, and LTACs (long term acute care hospitals) tend to pay in the middle to high $20s per hour for new RNs.
Thank you. I live in MN..and was just wondering how it compared. We're paid rather well here...and cost of living is low. BUT...it's very cold. I'd like to live somewhere warmer..without taking a huge cut in pay...and paying more for living. From what I've been told (and seen on HGTV lol) housing in that area is affordable.
I was hired in as a new grad at my current job at 24.15 and after 6 months our union raised income levels so I make 25.15 now. (plus 1.25 night diff)
What kind of differentials are there for nights?
How are taxes in TX? Property, income, and sales? What about the job market (for my hubby-not me) He'd be looking into something construction/remodeling.
Anyone know?

Property taxes vary depending on where you live. There is no state income tax in Texas so that is nice. Sales tax varies depending on the county, but is around 8.25%. Your husband should be able to find work if he is skilled labor, the construction job market in Texas is strong.

I am currently entering my senior year here in the DFW area. Yes, the cost of living is low, as is the median housing price. Sales tax doesn't go much over 8.625%. As Mody has previously mentioned, we have no state, income tax, and if that wasn't good enough, we also don't have tax on your average foodstuffs. My boyfriend (the kindly man who's putting me through nursing school), owns his own plumbing company. The new construction/remodel market has not taken nearly the hit, here in DFW, as it has in many other states. If you do decide to relocate, please feel free to message me as my boyfriend might be able to provide some decent job leads for your husband.

I wouldn't agree with that.
New construction is hard to make any money, Due to so many illegal immigrants doing the work, and the state turning their head and looking the other way.
If you husband plans on doing any skilled labor: Plumber, Electrician, HVAC he will need a licenses for that trade.

My fiance just graduated in March with her Bachelors in Nursing, and I too put her thru school, and I too own (partnership) a plumbing company, I live in the D/FW area.
I have a buddy that I know named Steve whom is putting his girl thru school, and fits your above description: By chance do we know the same guy.
yes, there is a large non-resident workforce in texas, but they are generally not "skilled" labor. I am about to start the 2nd year of nursing school, and in the meantime I work in the homebuilding business as I have for the last 11 years. I can say first hand that the market is still strong and there are jobs to be had. Yes, with many trades you do need a license, but not with all.

$22 per hr for new grad? That is in Texas? I can't believe it. With 4 yrs experience, I should make $30/hr.

This is too funny because my husband is putting me through school and he is a construction worker. We are planning to move to Houston but I am curious about his pay cut.
Nope, my guy's name is Richard. His company is based out of Keller. :)
