I know the 'Nursing Pay' discussion has had the CRAP beat out of it, but this thread is directed to those NEW GRADS that have just accepted their FIRST nursing job with ONLY SCHOOL-RELATED EXPERIENCE behind them. If you will, please answer the following questions:
1) Degree (i.e. Associates, Bachelors, etc.)
2) Starting Salary or Hourly pay
3) CITY and STATE in which you will be working
I am a career changer and I AM NOT going into nursing for the money, but my hopes are to get some REAL figures from this thread in an attempt to 'GUESS-TI-MATE' just what type of pay I should expect.
Any and all HONEST responses will be GREATLY appreciated!!
I have my BSN, graduated May 2002, started off with $17.65/hour plus shift diff. I am now making $18.09/hour and I work evening shift and the diff is $3.50/hr and on weekends (one a month) I get the $3.50 plus $2.65/hr. At end of year I will make about $47,000 year that is before taxes. I work in Atlanta (Decatur) Georgia.
Be sure to remember that the salaries are going to vary a lot depending on what part of the country you live in. Some areas have a much higher cost of living.
In my part of Texas the new grads. are starting around $18.00/hr with shift differentials. Weekend diff. can be as high as $6.00 at some hospitals.
I'm sure that there are some hospitals in the area that pay more for BSN, but I have yet to find one.
Hello! i will start as a new grad in May. Base pay is 19.75 plus 2.00 for pm shift (which I am doing) Another 2.00/hour for weekends (which I am also doing) I also signed on for 2 years so I get a $12,000 sign on bonus. I am going to be working on the tele unit. Edited to add I live in the Milwaukee area.
I will graduate March 10th!!!! I am a career changer as well. However I did have previous medical experience as a Physical Therapist assistant for 12 years--this did not carry much weight as far as the salary I will be making as an RN. Two other gals who graduated in my class are making the exact same as myself.
I graduated from a diploma RN program.
I am working at a rural community hospital in Nebraska.
I start as a GN(graduate nurse) at $ 17.50/hr
once I pass boards, I will be making $ 18.25/hr
This is higher pay than two of the closest big cities of Omaha and Lincoln here in Nebraska $2-3 dollars higher. I count myself as very fortunate. And as in all nursing there are positives and negatives to the area of nursing you go into.
I'm graduating in September, so I don't have a job yet, but I've been doing my research and around the Philly area new grads are starting around $23-26/hr.
Where in Philly are you talking? If it is center city on the night shift I can see it. However if you are talking suburbs...as an RN with 18 yrs in ICU on 3-11 I was not pulling that salary...glad I am out of there....kind of discouraging to seasoned nurses....but same old story I guess...

Doobiedo, I'm mostly looking at the center city hospitals, I definitely want to go to a teaching facility. The one surburban hospital I am doing clinicals at starts new grads at $23/hr. though. I have no idea how much more experienced nurses make, my guess is not much more unfortunately.
Emerald-where are you doing clinicals if you dont mind me asking. I'm right outside the city and will start clinicals in the fall and some of them will be in Philly.
Doobiedo-My mother's friend works in the ICU in a philly suburb ...only works 3 wknds a month and makes close to $40 an hour. She probably has about 15 years experience.....just thought I'd share!
I will graduate in August as an LPN and from the research I've done, here in Northeast PA LPN's receive $12.00--$14.00 in hospitals and $16.00--to $20.00 in nursing homes. Some of the private duty ads in the papers are hiring for over $30.00.
